The bolt in question I believe is shown in BMC Wksp Man illustration A26 and blocks off a oil gallery cross drilling which carries oil under pressure from the pump to the oil filter.
So to answer your question - the bolt/set screw is short with a copper washer under the head.

Re: Mayonnaise
940 head fitted with larger valves at the top and 12G185 original Cooper S head below. The 12G185 head had the valves closer together so less metal below and around the valve seats to allow the transfer of heat and the head was very prone to cracking between valve seats. The one good thing about the...

Re: Mayonnaise
I would disagree with the statement that the head gasket is good - the head gasket surface between No:2 and No: 3 cylinder is not good. Compare the gasket between the other cylinders and you will see what I mean. They are nice and shiny. Water could have been seeping between head and block and causi...

Re: Clutch Pedal Sticking.
Simmitc Drilling right through the centre of the shaft from the outer end of the shaft and cross drilling at the bushes concerns me. The shaft is only 5/8" in diameter and any size hole larger than 7/32" may weaken the shaft. A 7/32" gallery is sufficient to get grease to the bearings...

Re: Clutch Pedal Sticking.
Les The grease nipple is positioned on the pedal shaft boss so access can be gained when the M/C cover is removed. A suitable hole can be made in the M/C cover aligned with the grease nipple so as to give un-interrupted access to the nipple. The clutch shaft can also be part line bored from either e...

Before you put it all back together add a grease nipple to the brake pedal pivot bush.

Re: Trouble with nipples!
geoberni Thank you for the cross reference. Looking at the DIN and related data I cannot see a dimension or ratio for the waisting below the grease nipple head. Plenty of other data relating to grease nipples but not that one. No doubt it is there but have currently been unable to find it. Any point...

Re: Blocked water Ports
I note your comment in your first post regarding the least cost route - therefore personally I would use what I had and not complicate things by looking for a 940 head. If the engine is used normally and not driven hard the residual Tetraethyl Lead on the valve seats will suffice. Just check the val...

I have known rear hub nuts to have been put on cross threaded which then proves a devil to remove but never seized - not with all that back axle oil splashing about.

Just do one side at a time so that you can use the other chassis leg as datum.

The description that should be used is:- Looking from the rear of the car forward the L/H hub nut from car No: 376869 the L/H hub nut has a L/H thread. Looking from the rear of the car forward the R/H hub nut remained unchanged with the nut having a R/H thread. As regards the Traveller - the L/H hub...

Re: Blocked water Ports
You will not be able to flush the engine fully until the engine is back together and warm.
I was referring to the thermostat housing gasket as regards grease but you can very lightly grease the head gasket as well.
Just ordinary Castrol LM grease or equivalent.

Re: Blocked water Ports
The orange stuff is water jacket crud and is normal. Just flush the engine using an off the shelf flushing agent and use a good quality antifreeze/anti-corrodent when assembled. The two rear cylinders will run hotter and therefore appear drier if good coolant circulation is not maintained. Overall t...

Re: Rear bearings
The distance across the flats of a Morris Minor 1000 rear hub nut is 47.1mm. If you are making your own make it so that the spanner fits around the wheel studs - the spanner can then be held tight to the hub by the wheel nuts which is safer and eliminates the possibility of slippage by the spanner. ...

Re: Trouble with nipples!
Having examined a good selection of grease nipples I found that there is a considerable variance in the undercut below the grease nipple head. Some have very little depth/height of undercut while others have substantial undercut depth/height which would allow the grease gun union head to be easily a...

Re: Trouble with nipples!
I personally would not go directly to blaming the grease nipple. I would suggest that the new Draper end may be the problem when used with the angled grease nipples fitted. My Wanner grease gun handles angled and straight grease nipples with ease and has been used to lubricate all sorts of equipment...

Re: Front-left creak
The poly bush should be fitted furthest from the wheel (in front of the tie bar bracket) and the rubber nearest (to the rear of the tie bar bracket). The poly bush helps resit the braking forces acting on the front bush and the rubber bush helps with the articulation of the suspension. To remove the...
