Re: Brake fades heart sinks!

I believe it's known as 'comfort braking' - ie continuously reassuring the driver that the brakes will actually work when required to do so. Otherwise known as the lazy foot rest..... It's probably why some cars, like certain BMW models, require the discs to be replace every brake pad change...... ...

Re: Brake fades heart sinks!

Have you checked that all the front cylinders are working properly? I've had one on each side seize before, so the car still pulled up straight (as it had even braking on the front, but only 50% of what it should have been) but of course the brakes were terrible. I've got the same set up as you on m...

Re: Do you guys feel safe driving your Moggy??

Isn't installing side-impact bars in the doors a requirement in Australia? I've often considered getting something welded in there. Regardless, primarily driving a 'Moggie' since I began, eight or so years ago, has made me drive slowly and defensively in all vehicles. The closest I've gotten to som...

Re: Do you guys feel safe driving your Moggy??

Beautifully put - totally agree :D I think our cars are more solid than some of the modern cars, This is absolutely not the case, the effect of Euro NCP has made a 30mph accident into something solid something that people walk away from. If you ever get to look at the monocoque of the modern vehicle...

Agreed, Berni - my bugbear is questions about what oil to use. They are relatively frequent too…!

Re: MMOC Committee Meeting feedback

Great news Mike - sounds like a sensible outcome of both points! Great to hear that the forum will be getting the changes it needs too - while Facebook is really popular compared to this board now, as a platform for hosting discussion topics, or finding them at a later date, it’s pretty hopeless… Th...

Re: Triumph 1500?

I'd agree with ManyMinors in that it doesn't really offer any benefit. I had a Dolomite with the 1500 engine in it, and though it was OK, the nature of the engine is very different to the A Series. It is relatively torquey, but slow-revving, and if you are brave enough to rev it hard (for little ben...

Re: Driving Technique

Well, I never go in to first on the move. The beauty of course with the Morris is everything happens that much more gently, with of course a driving style to match. Well, it does with mine as it is completely standard without any up grades at all. I must learn to drive more 'gently' then  Seri...

Re: Dynamo v Alternator

Of the 7 Minors I’ve owned, 6 have had dynamos and the only issues I’ve encountered have been with faulty voltage regulators - all the modern Chinese copies. Charging is more than adequate, and as the standard system is reliable, I don’t really see the point in ‘upgrading’ to an alternator for littl...

Ahh - fair enough! It sounds as though your running in oil will be as good as normal oil though, which perhaps defeats the object?! Are you aiming to protect the cam with the high ZDDP concentration while running in?

Re: Driving Technique

I always let the clutch up from a standstill in first, but got used to pressing the clutch, slipping in to second without letting the clutch pedal up, then first and clutch pedal up. This always gets over the lack of synchromesh in first gear. That doesn't work on those rare occasions you need to c...

Re: Gearbox crunch

As per oliver90owner's comment, you'll need to go down the 5-speed route if you want lower rpm in top at a given speed. The usual conversion is a Ford Type 9, but they are hugely expensive and quite rare now (and not a great 'box in the first place in my experience of driving Fords with them in the ...

Re: ZDDP

I'm intrigued that you are using a monograde oil, assuming it's going in an A-Series engined Minor? I'd be more keen to use a decent mutigrade rather than too concerned about levels of ZDDP - BL recommended multigrades when they became available as they are better than the monogrades that came befor...

Re: Engine wear?

If your oil system is in good condition you will get enough oil for it to be visibly seen as a throw off from the rockers plus the observer being showered in oil. Presumably with hot oil, not a cold engine, and the OP hasn't indicated whether the engine was hot, cold, running at speed etc. It just ...

Re: Engine wear?

In short a new oil pump will not make any difference to the oil pressure if the bearings are worn. The maximum oil pressure is controlled by the oil pressure relief valve. You could try a new oil pressure relief valve and spring. To replace the oil pump you will have to remove the engine from the c...

Re: Engine grumble

You’ve been altering the timing, right, because you’ve put the correct 12G202 head on your 1098 engine which had a 948 head on it before? If I’ve got that right, and this issue/ noise has started SINCE changing the head, I’d put money on the grumbling noise you are hearing being the timing being set...

I’m sorry to hear that you’re stepping down, Mike, but I suspect you’ll be a lot happier for it! It’s a shame that some seem determined to be unpleasant - it’s easy to do on the internet but unfortunately this sort of behaviour isn’t a new thing! I’m glad I have enough going on in my life to not fee...

Re: Heater output !

In my experience of a few later cars, the standard late-style 'fresh air' heater is actually pretty decent if it's all set up OK. It should be more than capable of keeping the car warm, assuming it's not blocked and the heater tap is flowing well too. I used to run mine with an 88 degree thermostat ...

And the seller doesn't even offer a ring binder with the 111 pages of part numbers. Disappointing for £79.90. Otherwise it would have been a bargain :P
