Re: Ignition timing using E5 97-98 Super Unleaded fuel - now pinking!
Good to hear that you've potentially resolved your issue - I would be inclined to try another tank of fuel though, as the notion that you've had to retard the timing to cope with higher octane fuel just doesn't make sense - I wonder if it could have been a bad batch of fuel. Additionally, it's worth...

Re: Ignition timing using E5 97-98 Super Unleaded fuel - now pinking!
To add - what you read is correct, but if your engine really is pinking, advancing the timing will make it worse. So the advice you read is sound, but your situation is the opposite to what you would expect

Re: Ignition timing using E5 97-98 Super Unleaded fuel - now pinking!
The symptoms you report are the opposite to what I would expect - higher octane fuel is less prone to causing pinking at a given timing setting than a lower octane fuel, so you should be able to run slightly more advance. My cars will pink far more readily on 95RON than they do on ‘Super’, whether t...

Re: head gasket?
which got me thinking.... could the problem (knocking / rattling at certain revs) have been that the 948 head, being on a 1098, was giving too high compression, knocking out the advance curve and causing pinking/detonation at certain revs? Now that the 1098 head is on, hopefully the larger combusti...

I'm not sure you would even get 1/4 of a mile on the contents of the float alone, probably more like a few hundred yards ....... Question - could a 'warmed-up' faulty condensor give the symptoms described by the OP after 1/4 mile? I like your witticism. In my book, they are identical, the same, not...

Re: points again
Thanks Basil. Would you make any changes to timing if changing from unleaded petrol to super unleaded? It is possible that using higher Octane fuel will permit a slight advance in timing. This can result in improved performance and economy. The other (highly topical) advantage of premium grade fuel...

Re: Clutchless changes
That aside, I don't think inquiring about how driving without a clutch is possible is analogous to striking matches next to a barrel of gunpowder. Perhaps it is more similar to asking for the chemical reaction involved in the combustion of gunpowder to be explained. Anyone stumbling across this thr...

Yes, but again, as Bowie69 said, the OP was simply asking about how to achieve a clutchless change. We have all gathered that many think it is foolhardy and reckless

Those diffs are for the Austin axle, though, not the Nuffield axle fitted to the Series MM and early Series II cars

Re: Hats off to the 803!!
As I have no personal experience in the matter but have been following the thread, I find myself wondering if an 803 is any less capable than, say, a Citroen 2CV which certainly seems to retain fans and credibility. Anyone had/has one of each? I had 2 Citroen Visas with the 652cc version of the 2CV...

Re: Hats off to the 803!!
The 803 has one fault; the lack of oil filtration. If you are careful and replace the oil regularly (or top up is there is a regular loss) and avoid the motorways then there is no reason to give up on it. Yes the bearings are a bit weak; the white metal backed shells are there to absorb the debris ...

Re: Rubber mats - not carpets?
A lovely car, in wonderful condition but with a price that is, in my view, way over the top. Sadly I daresay this is destined to dissapear into another garage and remain, pretty much, a static exhibit, never used and enjoyed like it begs to be. Of course at that price (or whatever 'discount'...

Re: Hats off to the 803!!
It's good that you are enjoying your 803, but I'm guessing that you live in a flatter area than I do, as I can assure you your car wouldn't 'tackle the steepest hills in 3rd without an issue' here!!! It's horses for courses though - I would assert that actually in real-world driving, an 803-engined ...

Re: E10 Fuel September 2021
Out of interest one I saw said it was suitable for cars with/without catalytic converters with carburettors. Would there actually be any cars with carburettors and catalytic converters? and why would it make any difference to say putting it in a catalytic converter fuel injected car? I would imagin...

Re: 803 speedometer on 948 diff
It’ll be 1000 tpm in an 803 I think. If it’s an early SII, the only option will to send it for recalibration as already suggested as the only alternative is an MM one which I think is 1600 tpm and will be no good either.

Re: 803cc advice needed!!
I'm not aware of a way to retro-fit a full-flow filtration system, as I believe the block castings are different, but I stand to be corrected. If by 'plug up' the oil filter hole, you mean do away with the filter, then that clearly isn't the way to go  . If, however, you're worried about the f...

Re: Oil seepage
A first step would be to determine whether the oil is clean, indicating it is from the gearbox, or dirtier, indicating it's from the engine. Pop a piece of white card underneath the leak to help with the sleuthing . Hopefully you haven't changed the engine oil recently

Re: REPLACEMENT EXHAUST SYSTEM
I'm not aware of any standard systems comprising 2 boxes - there have been both one and two piece standard bore, single box systems available over the years, though. Twin box systems tend to be the large bore ones. Phil mentions the 'parp' - if you fit a system with two boxes you'll definitely lose ...
