Top Speed in a series II

Post by David53 »

Can other series II owners (with original 803 engine) share their top speeds? I found on my recent trip that 50 mph was comfortable, 55 mph was stretching it a bit. I could really push her up to 60 mph but felt it was thrashing the engine.

This doesn't seem too bad to me given that max speed in contemporary road tests was 62.3 mph.

Errr - the speed limit in the UK is 70! You should not go around boasting on a public forum of speeds in excess of 70 - or Plod may be at your door! You are admitting to a crime on a public forum!

The speeds listed for your car David sound about right - it has an incredibly 'low' (numerically high!) final drive ratio. Provided you don't have too many hills around - it could probably be usefully changed for a 4.55 final drive - which would reduce the revs (and therefore noise etc) - but probably would make no difference to the top speed - just make these speeds a bit more bearable !

In the contemporary Autocar test reports its given as either 76 or 78mph, while 948s could reach 73mph. I can say I've driven at the 130 km/h speed limit in France (81mph) going downhill! 8)

So you were being overtaken by the police who were following faster BMWs and Audis on a private track. Oh, the experiences we do have...

Probably about right - when doing 65mph my speed reads 69mph. They do overread.

Well I know the topics often go astray but not one reply answered the original question or used the immortal 803cc, that must be a new record for not answering the original question :D
