Thinking of buying a Morris Minor?

Postby LouiseM » Sun Mar 13, 2011 8:48 pm

Here's some useful advice if you're thinking of buying a Morris Minor:

Any car that is 40 years old or more is likely to have had a number of previous repairs carried out on it and will be susceptible to rusting. A Morris Minor is no exception.

Take your time when looking for a car. Don't be tempted to buy the first one that you see. There are still plenty of Morris Minors out there.

The fact that there are invoices available showing work carried out on the car does not guarantee that the work was carried out to a good standard.

A valid MOT certificate is not a guarantee that the car is roadworthy and has no faults at the time you are viewing it.

Mechanical and cosmetic repairs can be relatively cheap to fix. Structural and bodywork repairs can be very expensive. There are a lot of good Minors out there but there are also a lot of rotten ones. There are also plenty of restoration projects out there but if you don’t have the necessary skills and experience to restore it yourself getting someone else to do the work for you can be very expensive.

A nice shiny exterior could be hiding a multitude of problems. When you go to view a car do not be fooled by the fact that it looks nice. A seller may genuinely believe that their car is in a better condition than it is, or worth more than it is, but you must carry out a thorough inspection of the car before you purchase. Make sure that you identify any problems or faults before you buy so that you don’t get any nasty surprises later!

If you have little or no previous experience of examining a Morris Minor please seek advice from someone who does. Post a question on here and you will receive a quick response, and there may even be someone local to you who is willing to help inspect a car for you. Or contact your local MMOC branch members for advice. Find your nearest branch by looking at the ‘Branches’ forum here:
