GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT....?
I needed to service my started motor. Jacked up and supported car. Rolled under car and undid lower bolt. Disconnected dizzy cap, removed rotor arm, undid top starter motor bolt, took out the starter motor, replaced the brushes (soldering) and gave a it a good seeing too. Tested on the bench. All Fine. Offered up the starter motor, put in top bolt, rolled under car put in bottom bolt, out from under to tighten top bolt, then back under to check bottom bolt. Back on my feet - head in the engine - Then DOH!!
What school-boy error had I let happen........ that made me take the motor off and replace it all over again?
Answers on the back of a fag packet please - or here if you don't smoke.

You accidentally removed and reconditioned the starter motor from the neighbours brand new Jag?

Re: GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT....?
im gonna guess the clip that holds on the dizzy cap got trapped behinde/next too the starter?
i did that... twice... in the same day
i did that... twice... in the same day
if in doubt give it a clout!
Re: GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT....?
You may be going to say 'the lead wouldn't reach' - but in my experience there is plenty of slack and the lead will reach either way round. You haven't mentioned the dizzy - so the clip won't be trapped behind the starter, since it hasn't been undone............
Re: GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT....?
He did say "disconnected dizzy cap and removed rotor arm"

Re: GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT....?
You took a bite of your starter motor, hurt your teeth and realised the chocolate hob nob was bolted where the start motor should be?

Re: GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT....?
Thanks for that - Interesting and amusing answers - made my morning - Mach2 got it right - Dizzy clip trapped behind motor. A lesson learned (perhaps).

Re: GUESS WHAT HAPPENED NEXT....?
Been there, seen it, done it. The problem does not arise on a side valve, the starter bolts thread straight into the flywheel housing and the distributor is on the top of the engine
