can't get in my car

Post by Tezm8 »

I have done something incredibly stupid today. I was putting my Morris in my garage which is quite small and wouldn't fit a modern car. to fit it in I always get as close to the wall on the drivers side as possible and then get out the passenger door. this isn't convenient but its better than leaving it outside. anyway I drove it in with the drivers side unlocked but as close to the wall as possible so I could get out the other side I then switched the engine off and put the handbrake on, proceeded to then get out of the passengers side. not realising that the inside locking system on the passenger door was in the locked position I got out and closed the door meaning when I went to open the door from outside I couldn't get in and I cant get in the other side because even though its unlocked it is too close to the wall and I cant open it enough to get in and open the other side so its stuck in the garage with no way of getting in. if anyone has any suggestions that would be very much appreciated thank you.

Apart from what I presume is a sensible PM... a) Carefully remove the roof from the garage and use a crane to lift the car either across the garage to allow the driver's door to open, or even outside completely. b) Remove some of the bricks so that you can open the driver's door through the wall and climb in that way.

Trolley jack under the back axle, then roll the car forward on the jack till you can open the drivers door?

^+1. That would be my preferred way of doing it. Alternatively, either try and bump-push it out, or tow it out - I doubt the handbrake is that strong...

Unless you need to, don't put the hand brake on when it's in the garage.
I never do and often pull it out of the garage if it's late at night as the garage is under a block of flats.

As you said you drove the car into the garage and not reversed in -If you have the boot key open the boot let the back seat down crawl through the hole and walla you are inside the car simples. :D

I think, after all this, you need a bigger garage............

Could you reach in the partially open driver's side door and use a long stick to flip the lock tab on the other door?

Thanks for your replys I did finally get in by opening the drivers door slightly and sticking a broom Handel down to slowly wind the window down then I squeezed down the side of the car and then got in through the window to unlock the passenger door of my 1960 saloon. I think next time I will think twice before I do anything like that again. Few glad that's over I was exhausted after that :D

Those of us with the larger waistlines can struggle with many of the suggestions, finding a 3year old through the boot normally works.
