We are getting towards the end of the body restoration and thinking about improvements. The car will be for my son when he is 17 so insuring it as cheaply as possible is a priority. The mods we are thinking of are mostly safety related, dual circuit servo assisted brakes, possibly front discs, seats with head restraints and a 5 speed box, engine and suspension and body will remain standard 1098. Do any of the younger owners have experience of insuring a car with these mods?

Or have a conversation with a real person at a good local insurance broker. FJ couldn't get any where near our local broker's price on a like for like basis, despite the club discount.

And whilst every case is individual, the mods as decribed do not normally affect the premium.

Quite right. Our trav has a 1275 marina engine, Sierra 5 speed box etc. Insurer noted but made no difference to cost.1967 Trav, 1961 saloon, 1955 A30 and 1972 marathon beetle all for£260 per year with KGM. Can't go abroad but wasn't planning to anyway. Cheap as chips. 12k miles a year between them.

The mods you've listed all seem quite sensible and shouldn't be an issue when arranging cover. if you'd like me to arrange a quotation you can PM me with your number and i'll ask someone to give you a call. Your son will need to be a paid up member of the MMOC as a condition of the cover.

Offered a good price from FJ, at £974 at 17, though unfortunately I cannot build any no claims on this policy, and it will be my only car. Found Go Girl insurance to be the cheapest so far on a policy that enable me to earn a no claims

My then 17 Y O son insured his moggy with FJ for about £850 - when he changed to a VW T4 transporter Van his new insurers did take in to account his insurance history - strangly enough, his premium on the van was less on the Moggy ! even at his age of 18 ! can't recall who his current insurer is - He does miss moggy though !

How reasonable are Footman James with regard to young drivers? I'm 21 years old and have just bought a '59 4 door to restore, and am looking into insurance options when it gets on the road (hopefully this summer).
