need more luggage space

Post by Morrisminormo »

Hello all

I am going on holiday soon to Pembrokeshire in my 1957 saloon. It's a 5 and a half hours drive from where I live. But with my girlfriend, two boxer dogs in the back there isn't a lot of space left. I have been looking at boot racks, but they don't seem "practical" can they hold a heavy luggage case? A roof rack is another option but again what's the realistic weight limit, practically of them.

I could leave all my spares at home and have loads of room in the boot

Roof racks can damage roof guttering unless carefully fitted and increase fuel consumption. Also act like sails! Sounds like you need a traveller.

All the spares you need should fit under the boot floor, leave the spare gearbox at home!

I had a traveller, and i sold it! Oh well, I love my saloon. I don't think I need sails on my car, its windy enough up in the hills.

Yes I'll leave the spare gearbox at home :D

It wouldn't be a holiday without them. Not sure how she would pull a trailer. I have a 6x4 braked trailer. It will be far too large for her.

[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame] My Series MM tows this trailer as long as I avoid steep hills. It has since been modified (again) with a longer draw bar, a front prop, no need for axle stands.

The quality of the bot racks varies massively, the clamp on ones are not up to much , if you are prepared to drill the bootlid (or get a spare) the ones which screw on are fine. Luggage space is one thing which worries me with the saloon we are re-building, I have even thought of making a bulbous bootlid which could be fitted if more luggage space is required.

I'm sure this place has a "minor magnet" . I spotted what looked like a blue possibly 4 door a few nights ago in Pembroke, cant say Id seen that one around before. It was dark so hard to tell at a quick glance, did notice the Morris badge on the boot so series 2? I'm not really up on these things :-?

I'm sure I have seen a "bulbous" boot lid before.... I'm sure someone here will be able to shed some light on it.

There you go.
They were made by Alexander Engineering, Haddenham (don't know who made the spats), I think they look pretty good, though I don't know where you'd get one now.
Best wishes,
Mike.

My 55 (with a 948 and 8 inch brakes) easily copes with my small trailor(unbraked) Just make sure the towing bracket is substantially fixed to car ,not just the bolt onto the bumber brackets type (allthough this is the way the trader supplied ones fix)

And if you remove the spare wheel & refit it upside down, you can fill that up too.
