Vehicle Theft

Seems in the USA "Tamperproof" ID stickers can be obtained - anyone here heard of them?

Would this deter vehicle theft IF every panel carried one of these stickers with an additional one on the windscreen advertising their fitting?

Even if you don't want them on my database, keep a note of the Body - and as many other drivetrain numbers - just in case the worst happens.

This problem needs to be addressed!!!

If the car has been thoroughly repainted and all glass changed?

Around 30 Minor's about - both LCVs & 36'ers - with duff ID's, can usually date within 2mths via body number, but cannot be 100% owing to "gaps" in the database.

I'm just suggesting some ideas, saddens me when I hear about one that has been stolen, especially IF we could pull together and sort something out to deter the baskets!!

I had the local constabulary knock at the door a couple of weeks ago dishing out 'DNA Property Marker' kits. It's a liquid that contains tiny microdots unique to your property, you put a little dab on whichever belongings you want to mark and as long as there is one of the microdots in place it can be scanned and traced if it is found after a theft. It dries colourless so very difficult to find and remove, it's really meant for household goods but no reason why it cant be used on your car.

That's the point though.
It is far less likely to lose a car if the windows are etched, an average villain has to replace all the glass on mine, he will always opt for the vehicle without any protection, anyone buying a full set of glass will raise suspicions, he also will not want to spend the money, remaining anonymous is key to the average tea leaf.
It is still lamentable when regarding the current crop of cars stolen very recently, hardly any had any form of security, even when parked on the road at night, it needs to be said if you ask any crime specialist where you went wrong, he will tell you prevention is absolutely paramount.
A thief needs speed, by not slowing him down with even the simplest of anti-theft devices you are asking for it.

Sad isn't it, that someone wants to cause such upset for a fellow human by taking their property. I do think that if a detailed brain scan was taken, there would be a defect somewhere.

Seriously though, any "handy" guys on here design a thick steel bar,which will go over the transmission tunnel - secured under front seats - then add something that will lock the gearstick in gear and keep the handbrake in the UP/ON position?

Probably adapt something to block the hole for the starting handle too...lol

Ideas from a boring old fart...

"Blue remembered hills....etc etc"

Keep those body numbers coming in, all in a good cause!!

I made something similar years ago for my Traveller, roughly following a guide in the MMOC Technical Tips manual.

It comprises a length of steel tube approx. 1.25 feet long by 1" wide, hammered flat and rounded off at one end and drilled for a padlock clasp to go through.

Other end is left open tube, but I inserted a length of plastic tubing inside it so it's a snug fit over the handbrake lever and doesn't scratch all the paint off the the lever.

You put the car in 1st gear, pull on the handbrake, slip the steel tube over the handbrake lever, then use the padlock around the gear lever and through the hole in the flatted end of the tube.

I also painted the tube bright red, so it acts as a highly visible deterrent.

Works well, quick and easy to fit and remove and touch wood, no-one's had it away with the car yet!

I also took advantage of a free windows etching service provided a few years ago by Autoglass IIRC, and had all the windows etched with the numberplate.

Secret switch to activate the fuel pump is my preference. They could start it and run out of fuel a few yards down the road and I doubt they would hang about to try to fix it . I always wait for the pump to stop before starting and if you I forget it burst back to life pretty quick .

The "issue" I have with the "mystery switch" is the car is still able to roll, pretty useless if the thieves have a trailer ready!
Need to stop the vehicle moving in the first place.

True , but you could go for ever , what if They have a hiab ? I suspect most cars are driven away , at least to a quiet spot ?

Then you'll be looking for anyone with access to a Hiab!!!

Chances are, people more likely to notice the noise of squealing rubber than someone fiddling around looking for a switch(?).

Someone towed a car of mine away, they cut the handbrake cables----- bastards.

It happened many years ago and I'm still fuming. Forgive those that trespass against us. Not an easy one.

. Unfortunately if they want it they will find a way round most security fitted, even getting round a secret switch on the pump or dizzy is easy if you know what to do but I'm not saying how here of course
