Right distributor

Hi all, my '59 Traveller has had a engine change to a 1098cc. It's got a 25D dizzy, which I assume was in the smaller engine, I need a new dizzy, my question is do I replace with another 25D or, is there a better alternative? Cheers, Tony

I forgot to say the car is negative earth now if it makes any difference.

Not alot in it but the 45ds are better. Iv fitted the powerspark electronic 45d distributor. Iv since rebuilt my 25d as spare to carry.

Just had a look, what's it like to set up? Did you use your standard coil?

Yeah use the standard coil. The old ones seem the best. I basically just put the whole distributor on. Adjusted the timing till it ran the best. Took it for a drive then adjusted more till I was happy with it. Apparently the caps arnt the best so iv got a spare one aswell.

25 d is correct for your car , ive got this and gone electronic once its set thats it no more fiddling .

Several folks have stated that the 45d is 'better' than the 25d, but have never given any evidence as to why. I'd be intrigued to know. I've always stuck with the 25d as I've never had any trouble with them.

I don't think there is any significant advantages, just that the 45Ds are readily available and cheap, so make a good cost-effective replacement, if only for temporary or spare use. I fitted a new 'universal' E-bay 45D temporarily to my 1275cc MG Midget engine while I rebuilt the original 25D4, and found it was OK, though the engine felt a little 'flat' when accelerating compared to the rebuilt 25D4, so I suspect the advance curve wasn't quite right.

I think the advance curve is different tho don't really know. The caps bigger aswell. I know Roy would always reccomend the 45d tho never said anything bad about the 25d.

to be honest ive had both carnt see what the advantages are with the 45d car still runs well

There were dozens of different advance curves for the 25d and the 45d as they were all fitted to different cars and different specs of engines. That's the trouble with the new ones - unless you're getting one from someone like the Distributor Doctor, there's no way of telling what advance curve you're getting.
