Yay! the 3 mm reverse letter and number punches have arrived so we will be able to punch the Z numbers on the NMP plate from the rear of the plate as original.

Firedrake
Yes, very interested in your NMP plate work. Well done.
Please put my name down for one. I think I would be glueing it on.
Any ideas of where they were fixed on the MM? Is there an MM with one still attached? Mine's a september 1950 soft top.

Colin, e mail me with contact details and any numbers you want stamped ie Z XXXX and the RH side one. Series MM, from which original the mould is taken were in the bulkhead (Straight as opposed to later indented) behind the engine. That is why most of them MM's have survived as they are less vulnerable to corrosion there. the other difference is that while later ones were spot welded to the tie plate, MM's were screwed with a philips type screw in each corner. No doubt someone will know the correct size

Just an update,I am picking the laser cut blanks up on Monday and we should start hand pressing next week. For those of you who ordered and supplied postal addresses and expressed a preference for stamped / unstsmped, many thanks. If you haven’t sent me postal address and / or Z numbers / RH numbers, I will need them if you want them stamped. I will be sourcing postage too! Looks like RoyalMail are favourite for single orders, while other delivery companies are better for multiple ( and therefore heavier) orders .

I will keep you updated.

Nb correct e mail address is dadmjsdm@aol.com

Hi.

I'm posted abroad until mid-September and will not be in a position to order until then.

Would that work, or have I missed out?

My Z number, including the Z is nine digits long. Will they fit into the appropriate space?

Very unusual number then . Usually 5/6 I think there is room for 6 . Do you have a photo?

The number only exists on the bulkhead metal strip plate, ( NMP plate has that bit missing) I had to remove it to make out the numbers, even then with the thickness of paint I had to hold it at various angles to identify the numbers. A photo would show nothing clear. I'm surprised myself at the number of digits.

Pomreg may be able to assist re this as there may be differences re LCV numbers but I did not think that drastic. Some extra digits on the thin plate indicated type of vehicle but were separate from z number which was fairly constant in length

I've pm'd Chris about this but not sure what he's doing now he has left us (either permanently or temporarily)
Hope to get a response from him. I may have to take your plates unstamped at this rate. Thanks for your comments.

Les, Firedrake. My pickup is a later Austin badged model and the L/H No is Z35127-34 and the R/H number is 6 digits. All numbers are stamped normally, ie not reverse stamped.
Both numbers are clearly visible on NMP plate but on the bulkhead strip the L/H number is very lightly stamped and the font is smaller than the R/H number.
Regards John

Thanks for posting that John, my pickup is also an Austin, and your Z number is the same as mine, I have 9 digits yours has 8. However if you count the hyphen it's 9! ---- and where your hyphen is I read a 4. I now reckon that 4 is in fact a hyphen! I'll be checking that now. My plate is missing a chunk on the Z number area but the bulkhead strip, like yours is lightly stamped with smaller font. Great help thanks again.

I have no idea why these should have longer numbers unless LCV's were different

I have copied some of Chris's mails to try and clarify and he too mentions a hyphen in the Z numbers for LCV calling them cab codes rather than body codes so perhaps this was to designate the difference in body build from all others (Non chassis)

Hi Jonathan

T = Tourer/R = 4dr/C = Civilian LCV (think up to intro of BLMC paint?)/P = GPO(last were NYU/V/W-E) cab code Z37254-5.

Separate BM tags were alloy, same as EX = exports & A = Australia(Zetland)

Confused??!!

Join the club.

BM = MM & S2 2dr
BMA = S2 non GPO van
BMB = S2/early S3 GPO engineers
BMC = ditto mailvan
BMD = S2 Traveller
BME = S3 2dr
BMF = S2 4dr
BMG = poss S2/S3 export GPO spec van
BMH = S3 4dr
(BMK = 1959 Mini)
BMT = MM/S2/S3 Tourer.(5 digits max)
CMC = S2 LCV Chassis cab
TMB = S2 LCV pickup

Blunder in my last but one....

BMA,TMB & CMC only used up until (c)22329...aka cheesegrater grills.

(c) 22329/30 & (b) 13000/1

Pita is that post '69 Civvy LCVs have stamped(and smaller case) "Z35127-34", rather than reverse stamped...Grrr blame BLMC!!!

Cheers

NMP plate prefixes;

C = Civilian (non GPO) LCV
P = GPO van (ended at 216950)
R = All 4dr (not H)
T = Tourer

It probably doesn't help but looks like the font was smaller (Possibly to get all the numbers in) than the 3mm reverse we have and was not even reverse stamped anyway on the NMP plate as the saloons were.

Oh, if only there were someone still around from Pressed Steel / Nuffield Metal products..... Gaydon can't help, I have asked.

Les, Firedrake, looking at my NMP plate again the L/H Z number is a smaller font than the R/H number.

John, Looks like that is the answer. That said, I think the Z number was 3mm (reversed) and RH number was 5 mm

Is it as Chris said not in reverse. If so, we have only got the standard 3 mm reverse dies for the Z number. Reverse tended to be dearer than standard so the NORMAL smaller font may be available for you to DIY .

Let me know if you just want the RH number stamped or a blank plate.

Jon, Both numbers are normal not reverse stamped, may be a late LCV thing, I wonder if the late travellers were the same?
I wasn’t on your list, just helping you and Les with the numbers and style of being punched but having set to mine with a wire wheel it has started to disintegrate, not a priority at the moment and know your just covering your costs but could you PM me the cost of the plate please.
I’ve covered mine in grease and got visitors here for the weekend, when they’ve gone I will measure the font heights.
Regards John.

Happy to help, I will add you to the list as a provisional. Cost is £15 plus postage. Not quite a plucked out of air cost but worked out on making 50 of the plates, (orders now exceed that but so do costs ie 2nd mould, more blanks etc etc.)

As my new engine number plate from some mini spares place cost £28.00 stamped it seemed fairly reasonable (?) Like many others my car had a 948cc gold seal engine in - fitted in 1978 - and after about 5 years of trying to persuade the DVLA to note the change, I gave up. As the old number is still on the V 5 I decided to make the engine match the number instead. I know it isn't the engine it purports to be but hey ....

Just as a footnote of there is any left over after costs are covered we are using some to buy a branch banner and the residue will go to the MMOC prostate cancer charity. (possibly some to cover surgery on my right arm from stamping 200 of the damned things out).
