What are all the switches?

Post by harveyzone »

Hi all,

Sorry for the nooby questions...

I have just picked up my sister's 1970 Morris Minor 1000, as it is no longer ever used and she needs to sell it. There are a few little jobs that need doing on it, but I am struggling to work out what all the switches and knobs do. I have no manual and cannot find one online, but after much googling I have worked out the centre ones which I believe are windscreen wash button, wiper switch, ignition switch, headlights, choke. I am struggling with the others though can anyone advise...

There is a pull knob with a C in the middle and light under the dash on the passenger side.
There is a switch under the heater control, which I assume is something to do with the heater.
There is a knob just under the left of the steering column which has some text on it which has mostly worn away, (S H AE ?)
There is a switch and red light under the dash to the right of the steering column. This looks like it might be a non-standard addition.

Any ideas what they should do?

Many thanks,
Tom

As standard on a later minor under the speedo from left to right:

Screen washer
Wipers
Ignition
Lights
Choke

The knob to the left of the steering wheel will say'push heater' and allows hot water to flow around the heater. The small silver switch on the heater is for the blower

There is a small slide switch under the dash around the choke control, to turn the speedo illumination on/off

Not that many compared to most modern cars, that have arrays of various switches and controls, the bare minimum almost with a Minor.

Anything else would appear to be non standard, where is the one with a C in the middle, again sounds non standard.

Brilliant - thanks.

So, if I am correct, this one is Push Heater, so effectively hot or cold for the blower:

And this is the heater direction, and blower switch, under the speedo:

This one definitely looks like a non-standard addition. It is just under the steering column, to the right:

This one I thought was standard as it looks more contemporary, but could be wrong. I thought it was the choke at first! It is on the passenger side, directly under the glove box:

I will have to have another look as I didn't see a switch for the dash lights.

You are correct about the switches in your first two pictures. The second two must be later additions. Has the car got any of the following added?
- Hazard warning/4-way flasher system
- Rear windscreen de-mister/de-fogger
- Front or rear fog lamps
- Manually-switched reversing/back-up lamp

If any are fitted, these may account for the additional switches.

The switch for the dash lights is a small sliding switch hidden under the bottom edge of the dashboard and, as biomed32uk says, can be found above the choke knob.

You are right about the heater. The other two on the little panels are accessories and the easiest thing is to turn them on and see what happens. If nothing happens you might have to follow the wires and see where they go, as over the years plenty of mogs still have switches for gadgets that were taken off years ago.

Thanks everyone. I have had a go at switching them on/off to see what happens but couldn't see anything. I guess I will have to start tracing wires etc, but it is a bit cold and damp tonight. That might have to wait till the weekend. :-(

Yes switch them on and see what happens, or trace wires. Ejector seat, nitrous injection, flux capacitor possibly.

Seriously they are probably for accessories that have come and gone.
