Engine number.
Does anyone know if is possible to tell the age of an engine from the engine number? Chris.

That's a good question, but given the relative ages of the different engine types/sizes and the elapsed time (decades) since they were all made, I'm not sure if it'll really be that relevant, especially once you take refurbished units into account.
I'll be interested in any more knowledgable answers though.
My car paperwork says it has a 'BMC Gold Seal' unit installed, but when that was, I've no idea.
To me it's just a green painted engine......

Those fitted at production yes, RKM's & 8G's...have NO idea!!
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!
