1954 style air cleaner - opening?

Post by Castanley »

Hi all,

I was wondering if anyone knows how to open up an early type air cleaner? My 1954 Series 2 has the old type air cleaner, a black cylinder containing a wire mesh which is horizontally mounted over the top of the carburettor. Looks like it's pretty clogged so I've removed it and wanted to clean and re-oil the mesh which I suspect hasn't been done for many years. The metal cylinder looks completely sealed and I've tried twisting it but can't seem to find a way to open it! Any help would be very gratefully received.

Thanks,
Chris

Just soak the air cleaner assy it in petrol - that will dissolve the crud.

Ok, thanks Phil.

So as I suspected, the outer housing is a sealed unit?

It's the unit labeled 1, which is a silencer. The steel mesh receives oily vapours from the rocker box cover via tube 2 so can become quite filthy over the years and just needs washing in petrol to get back to 'clean', as Phil said.

The oil bath type (4) shown in the remaining graphic was the 'export' model where a dusty atmosphere would be expected.

Ah, an education as always on this site.
I have the very much simplified 1098 set up so this is quite new to me.
