Did anyone see the split screen surround that just sold on fleabay? I was watching the auction in the hope of bagging it for my car but it ended up selling for £160 plus £10 shipping! Madness. 😮

I think that price simply goes to show the rarity, the demand and true value of these items. Personally, I don't think that price is unreasonable if they were in decent condition. IF new sets were ever produced (which is highly unlikely) how much would you expect to pay for them?

Well I get the rarity and demand but I've seen previous auctions for these in a similar condition go for half that, so I'd say someone got a raw deal this time around. Still, if they're willing to pay that then good on them. Pity I wasn't on the lookout for a set when the cheaper ones were sold.

First untrimmed attempt with brass, still needed annealing but the shape, definition and size are favourably comparable with the original donor pair. there is however none of the metal distortion we were finding with steel. Ray is still not satisfied and when he is we will be offering them up to the screen trim and central pillar on the car the originals came from. (Thanks to Colin Cantor and his Clarendon Grey early Series II convertible) ) I have received several quotes for chroming and once the moulds are producing consistently quality replicas we will get them chromed

The fettling, trimming and hand dressing are very labour intensive and make the NMP plates positively easy in comparison. Onwards and watch this thread for further updates.

Indeed, much better in brass. I reckon you'll get where you want to be with these very soon.
Now we just need someone to remake the surrounds themselves...…
Best wishes,
Mike.

Well if he's still reading, I'd still call him a Pratt for splitting the 2 bits.
I'd be livid if I were the buyer of the original lot....

The least he could do is offer it to the original buyer in order to complete the trim set.

He actually has the nerve to say
Split Screen Windscreen Centre trim joint. One piece only. The other piece to make the pair is available in one of my other listings. A very rare part.....needs rechroming.
No it isn't! He's already sold it for crying out aloud!

MMOC Response
I have been trying for years to find someone who will make the splitscreen surrounds for the club but without success. Even asked Indian members to see if they could find someone over there to make some maybe out of polished aluminium. One of the problems in getting them made in the UK or EU is minimum volumes.

We currently have a couple of sets that need rechroming to sell on behalf of a member who no longer has an MM. Some rechromers wont touch them as it is very easy to destroy them on the polishing wheel as I discovered several years back when I salvaged several sets from a local scrapyard and only 50% cam
e back from the chromers.

PS The MM gearknobs and sump plugs were financed by the club and sourced by the Club's MM Register. Some gearknobs are still available.

Today we popped over to Colin's with Ray and Tony to trial fit the re-made Series MM / Series II windscreen joining clips. They look very good and fit really well.

Next steps are to remake the male tool in steel to sharpen up the bends and folds and get the trial set chromed. Watch this space!

I know it has been some time since I first mooted the subject of reproduction of these clips and we have supplied a trial set to two people (unchromed) This seemed to go well albeit that one lower clip was damaged on fitting a particularly difficult surround / rubber in Malta. Ray - Uttlesford's 92 year old engineer has now produced enough upper clips and is working on the corresponding lower clips for us to send for chroming when the current situation allows. The pressing is not too difficult and the detail is good, but the hand finishing and trimming has required a lot of work.

later MM / S II windscreen surround joining clips:

We sent a pair of our reproduction later MM/ Series II windscreen clips to Mark Kram in Malta.

They were unchromed and from the first batch produced. He had some trouble with the new rubber screen seal but these seem to have been resolved.

He has now had them chromed locally and has sent me this photo. A real tribute to 93 year old Ray Mitchell's engineering and fettling skills.

We are waiting for two local'ish chrome platers to send a pair each back to us before we decide which to go for and will then let those who have registered an interest have priority. Only 40 pairs have so far been made as after pressing, they require quite a bit of hand finishing.

I would have added a photo or two but I seem to be unable to on this forum. They are on Uttlesford FB page and the MMO FB page.

Fantastic work Firedrake. I had a look at the photos on the Uttlesford FB page and they look great when fitted up on a car. A real testament to the workmanship and perseverance of Ray !

Keen to see what the two samples you have chromed locally turn out like.

Keep up the good work.
