My daily driver - 1954 Split screen 803cc

Hi all,

Just thought I'd jump in and properly introduce myself!

Name's Andy, later half my Twenties, mechanically minded yet learning and experimenting. Obsessed with Velosolex French mopeds.

Now the good bit. I drive a 1954 Morris Minor 803cc, 4 door saloon in black! He's my dependable steed every day, rain or shine. I wash him, care for him and try my best to keep him in tip top shape.

Fun things about him:
803cc engine, but definitely not the stock carb - There's a custom built flange to fit it!
The black paint isn't original. It's peeling on every edge, revealing a gorgeous brown!
He only indicates right at the moment, left trafficator is stuck closed.

I'm hoping to get the black removed at some point and preserve whatever is found underneath.

No doubt, you'll see me about on here, looking for help and advice, but offering my overly-vocal opinion too!

Hi Andy,
Got curious about that colour, the potteries branch have an online colour chart, link below, there are no browns listed until February 1955 and that was 'Sandy Beige'......
It would be interesting therefore to know what's under the brown.......
If it's peeling anyway.......
The other option is that your brown was actually Maroon, that has discoloured under the black?

I'll have to get a picture. It's such a vibrant colour! Would love it as my base colour

HI and welcome. If you want to find evidence of the original colour, the recommendation generally is to look behind the speedometer at the bulkhead, this is the area most often missed during a respray - on my Minor which was resprayed white, the original Peat Brown is very evident there.

Welcome Andy! My traveller (Monty) was my only and everyday car for several years - we went everywhere, holidays the lot and it never once let me down. My son convinced me to sell it eventually and get a pre war Morris Minor instead - not an everyday car at all really though! I do rather miss my traveller...he lives at a posh DeVere hotel now near Gloucester - they bought about eight I think a few years ago and had them all wrapped in their corporate colours to advertise DeVere hotels.

A traveller is the later goal for me, a sound earlier one too

Is this the one in this thread that you are referring to Biggles? (scroll down about a third of the way). I snapped it at the De Vere Tortworth Court Hotel in August last year.

I was told that every De Vere hotel had a similar 'corporate green' Traveller but I've been to the one near Jodrell Bank since....and there isn't one there. We're going to the one at Daventry for New Year 2020/21 so I'll report back then, Bet you all can't wait!

Welcome to the forum, Andy.
Love the car, I've also got a black 1954 split-screen, 803cc Minor, although mine is a 2 door. Brilliant cars to work on, I've owned mine for about 6 months now and done lots of work to get her roadworthy again. Planning to come along to a few MMOC events this year so just making everything as reliable as possible.
