howling differential

Post by stuffedpike20 »

This post fizzled out on 'mechanical' , so forgive me for trying it on here.

I was advised that in 95% of cases, the reason that diffs whine is because the case hardening on the crownwheel and pinnion teeth has worn off; and the only way to build a diff that does not whine is to use a brand new crownwheel and pinnion.
Any thoughts please?

Thanks, John.

To be fair, it only fizzled out after 2 pages of discussion! You got some pretty good advice from IslipMinor. I didn’t see anyone say that the only way to rebuild a diff is using a brand new crown wheel and pinion, but I did see it suggested that they should be used as a pair. In all honesty though, if you aren’t going to undertake the diagnosis yourself by stripping the diff and inspecting and measuring everything, you are going to be at the mercy of a specialist in any case, though I think it’s been suggested what the issue is likely to be given the particular symptoms you’ve described?

It did fizzle out.
The advice I got was not on the site, but over the phone from a tranamission company. Sorry if that was not made clear.
I have confessed that stripping a diff is beyond me.
Other owners have suggested that diffs can be made better without having to use brand new crownwheel and pinion; I am just trying to get to the truth of the matter.
What am I guilty of?

Not guilty of anything! I just read the other 2 page thread and thought there was a fair amount of information to go on, and that you won’t be able to get much more without stripping the diff, inspecting it and measuring tolerances. :D

I believe it is sometimes possible to quieten a diff by altering shimming so the crown and pinion mesh better but this would depend on the degree of wear or damage that is causing the noise in the first place. If you are not willing to try it yourself you would also face the balance of costs between new parts and hours of labour.

Understood. Thanks Ian.
I just don't want to throw good money after bad. I am sure others have been in the same position.
