If we're getting technical, is it the Font or the Typeface that the OP is looking for :-?
A font is just a subset of typeface.
A font is the designation used for specific members of a typeface family.
A font is supposed to be of a specific size while a typeface doesn’t have to be.

So Arial is a Typeface.
While Arial Bold, Italic, 12 point would be a Font. :wink:

I very much doubt that anyone knows what was originally used.

Not having a 'control panel' I've no idea, but are the letters not cut into the panel?
I suppose it might be possible to photo a panel and there might be some 'Font Identification' app that could be used....?

It appears to be a variation on Gill Sans, a remarkably clear type introduced in the early 20th Century and quickly adopted by industry.
