Silencer advice please

I've now got my Traveller's 1275 engine running okayish and have it booked in for rolling road tuning at the end of March. (I'm only aiming at smooth and economical running, not racing!). I've decided, though, that the standard bore stainless steel exhaust system I bought as part of a cheap job lot years ago is a bit noisier than I like, and it would make sense to change it before the tuning session.

I'm thinking of using the ESM mild steel large bore twin box system EX226, with their Marina stainless downpipe EX123 (ESM warn about the quality of the flange on their mild steel downpipe, but I can't justify the price of the complete stainless system). I've a mini manifold which the existing 1.25" downpipe fits very well. Will the Marina downpipe fit this manifold, and has anyone any experience of this twin box system?

Or alternatively, would a complete Maniflow system (LST053), twin box, non LCB, achieve my objectives better, at lower cost?

Personally I would purchase the Maniflow system. Trying to make any other system work to me is a no brainer.

If you are worried about exhaust noise ask for a average decibel reading for each exhaust mentioned.

Thanks Phil. I take it you are recommending the full Maniflow including the LCB. At the moment I'm tending towards keeping my mini manifold as existing, as I like its "sort of standard" appearance and the LCB isn't needed for performance. Would there be any problem using the ESM Marina downpipe with the Maniflow twin box system?

Just use the system in my link above without the LCB or any other variations.
If in any doubt speak with Maniflow.

LCB and the maniflow systems are not going to be quieter than standard mild steel exhausts, in my opinion.

I have the Maniflow and have also fitted an additional resonator they supply (ask on the phone), unfortunately it's still a little too intrusive for my tastes.

There are two issues here:-

1. Possible additional noise

2. The flow of exhaust gas.

The additional noise may be an issue but can be overcome with the fitment of a tail pipe resonator.

The 1275cc engine benefits from an increase in exhaust gas flow which can be helped by fitting the Maniflow exhaust system. You may not get that flow with other exhaust systems. At least you know that you have a proven system/product.

Fitting/adapting various parts to make the exhaust system may still allow the exhaust system to make more noise than necessary and may not give the increase in exhaust gas flow required.

Again I would suggest that you speak with Maniflow and ask about the predicted decibel rating. They should be able to give you an answer.

Please excuse my ignorance, but would a resonator be in addition to the twin silencer boxes, or is it a term for the rear tailpipe box?

The ESM system is described as large bore, although the actual bore is not specified. I would expect that it would give some performance improvement over the 1.25" existing system, although probably not as much as the Maniflow.

The resonator box would be in addition to the twin silencer boxes.
You may not even need the additional resonator box but if the exhaust noise is not to your liking you can always add it on.
All you can do is either go for it or suck it and see any other system.

I suppose if push comes to shove, and you're as fussy as I am, another additional silencer can be fit with relative ease as they can be had in all shapes and sizes for less than £30.

Many thanks both.
