Personally I'd try reconnecting the wires the other way around ... but that's just me!

Probably got the wrong gauge or sender unit from an earlier model.

But over to Willie as he seems to have this problem sewn up! (where are you??)

guage

Post by Willie »

Here I am Cam......if your fuel guage reads backwards then
indeed, you have the wrong fuel tank sender unit, it will
be of no use changing over the wires. If you have the
bronze faced speedo then, almost invariably you should
have a tank sender unit which has a NUT securing the lead
on it(as opposed to a Lucar push on connection). I say
almost invariably because the first 1098 cars also had
bronze faced speedos. The year of your car is therefore
important. OK I have just noticed that yours is a 1971
vehicle, with a black faced speedo? If so, ANY late type
sender unit with Lucar connector should be ok. Please let
us know if you find that your present one has a Nutted
terminal.
