can anyone tell what this part is, it has a steel rod heading back into the firewall on the nearside.<br>Image<br>

As answered on your first post it's the windscreen wiper motor.

Seeing this made me think "where is the windscreen wiper motor on my car?" because it isn't the same place as shown in the photo.

Were they in a different place on the Series II?

A pig to remove first time but not too bad once you get the knack. The motor box is just suspended on rubbers inside a sort of cage.

its when you want that bonnet hinge off and trying to work round the wiper is a real pain.
