2 speed wipers Push-Pull Type switch

I am in the process of converting my clap hands style wipers over to a two speed wipers.
A two-speed motor is on the way. I will be swapping a 46-tooth, 100-degree gear wheel in to it..
This is the original wheel from my wiper motor on my car so that solves the motor gear problem.
Now I am trying to find a dash switch to operate the two-speed wiper motor.
I think it takes four wires because of the park feature. I have not got the new motor yet to check.
The kits sold by the vendors all use a toggle or flick type switch.
I would like to use a Push-Pull Type or twist switch so I can use the original W knob.
Has any one done this conversion to a dash switch of this type?
If not does any one have any ideas on what might work?
I have seen switches that will make the single speed a two speed wiper.
The problem is they give a slow speed and the regular speed as the high speed.
If i ever get them working I will let the group know if my clap hands wiper work well.
The kits I have found only use the 1963 and newer style wiper set up.
This means I am in uncharted territory and on my own trying to get it to work.

Thank You for your time and help,

Vigil

Light switch!

An old used original would be better quality and probably cheaper, just swap the knob over from your existing wiper switch.

an earlier post i did..

if you look about half way down it shows the mounting plate etc..

i fitted this in a 1956 clap hand car.

Neil,

I started thinking about the light switch. Are you sure the switch would work?
When you pull the switch to the first position it turns on the running lights.
When you pull it to the second position it turns on the head lights -
But there is still power to the running light because they stay on
Wouldn't this cause a problem using it for the two speed wiper?
May be i am missing some thing here in my thinking and you can clear it up for me.

I found this 3-speed heater fan switch, and it might be possible to adapt the Minor 'W' knopb to fit, just don't wire up anything to the 3rd speed setting.

Another great idea. I was wonderind about a heater control too.

Thank you.

I just pulled a light switch out of a friends parts car.
So i am going to give it a go for now.

If you can cut the brass strip in the light switch between the sidelight and headlight positions then the switch should work in two separate positions. I will check the theory later.

Mike,

My friend is coming into town this week end to see his mom who lives near me.
So i will have the light switct then. Let me know what you find out.
It sounds possible to split the two - now we have to see if it can be done with out distroying the switch.

Which of the two strips in the picture is the one to cut?

S1 feeds the side light circuit but it is only my theory so I would get some more advice before ruining the switch

My car developed some problems so i have not done much on the wipers.
My car now has the motor out for a rebuild.
I did check the polls to see what was active.
Holding the poll labeled 51 pointed down -
The first position pulled out - The one on the right marked A to the right is active or on.
The other poll has an S to the is active when the switch is all the way out.
I have not had a chance to see how to cut the connection.
My friend just put a wiper motor & switch in his hot rod. He bought a switch that controls every thing.
With the switch he just ran the power direct to the switch.
I did s search on the Internet on converting to 2 speed wipers.
http://spriteclub.com/tech/wipers.htm
It shows using a relay in the system as you can see at the link.

If you use the light switch let me know what you needed to do to make it work.

A friend of mine has used a light switch to control the wipers and the washers. 1st pull puts on the wipers and 2nd pull does the washers so I can't see why it isn't possible to use the switch for the 2 speed wipers.

I use a light switch for my washers and wipers but the difference is that the washers and wipers are on together, pos.1 is wipers, pos.2 is washers and wipers. I am not sure that you would want the slow and fast speed wipers operating at the same time. With the later toggle light switches you can get any combination of on/off depending on which terminals you connect. It is very much a question of suck it and see

Thread resurrection time! This looks promising, it's got an extra terminal for use as either 2-speed wipers or lights. Maybe the Minor 'W' knob will fit, but if not, then get a pair of them and put letraset letters on them.
Part no. CLS0161

One 'version' of the switching circuits of the CLS061 switch is the same as a standard Minor headlight switch - off-on-on, with the second 'on' being connected to the first, i.e. sidelights + headlights. The Minor headlight switch can be used for 2-speed wipers, but needs 2 x 5-pin changeover relays as well to complete the circuit.

Normally the switch is more complicated and does the work instead of using relays.

This is the circuit:
[frame]Image[/frame]
The relay on the left provides the park circuit when wiper switch is 'off'. When the wiper switch is in position '1', it switches the park circuit off, and switches on 'Speed 1'. With the wiper switch in position '2', the left relay stays energised to keep the park circuit switched off, and the relay on the right switches the supply off to Speed 1 (otherwise a short through the now connected pins S1 and S2 in the lighting switch). The wiper switch in position '2' connects the power directly to the 'Speed 2' wiper motor terminal.

It is more complicated than using one of the kits with the switch doing all the work, but does allow you to keep the original look of a standard Minor 'W' wiper knob on a standard Minor lighting switch.

I have used a variant on this by modifying a marine switch to have 4 positions - off, intermittent wipe, slow and fast wipe. Grafted the Minor 'W' knob on to the switch and all looks completely 'standard'!

The second 'version' of the CLS0161 switching does provide a bit more, but cannot control the 'park' circuit, so will still need at least one of the relays. Using just one relay with this second version removes the 'designed in' braking that the park circuit provides, so when stopping the wipers they could drift past the intended park position a bit. Even on a wet screen to the point when they go past the park switch and complete another cycle!

Since using relays is required, I would suggest just using the a standard Minor lighting switch and the circuit above. It works very well with the Lucas 14W motor, but you do need to get the right sweep angle.

Hi just wondering what size amperage relays should I use for this kind of setup and also what fuse size might be suitable?
Thanks :)

The relays are standard 5-pin 30A relays and if you are using a separate fuse just for the wipers I would suggest 10A, but you could also use the existing A4 fuse.

A couple of relay suppliers:
