I just installed a new electric washer kit.
I wired it up using the live feed from the petrol pump to the switch and then to the pump.
Checked it with a light bulb, all was fine.
I attached the new pump, switched it on, it did not work, but got very hot,
The pump unit a lucas WSB100, and does not have any positive or negative markings,
so i have tried turning the connections around, that did not work either.
Can anyone offer any advice on what might have gone wrong.

does the pump work when attached directly to the battery terminals?does it make a noise?does the one way valve work?

Good old push button works well for me.....
That's NOT a good place to take the feed - unfused supply. And you do have the ignition on when you tried it??

The best way to wire a washer pump is to swap the wiper switch for a light switch, wire the wiper feed to the side light position and the washer pump to the headlight position. Pos 1 = wipers, Pos 2 = wipers and washers.
NB the live feed goes direct to the pump then to the switch. If the pump sucks instead of blows then swap the terminals over. You also get better results if you move the washer bottle up to the bulkhead.

I wondered if you could explain how the pump is wired please? I've fitted a light switch in place of wiper switch, run a wire from pump to switch positive and negative wire from pump to switch and nothing. Tested pump directly on battery and works any ideas please?

the switch should be placed in the circuit to break (switch) one wire only e.g. live or negative depending on which way round the circuit is running have a look here[frame][/frame]

in your case for light read pump

As above - DO NOT take the feed from the petrol pump. And your wiring is very wrong. You need a feed (fused) to switch - then from switch to pump - and from pump to earth............ But what was wrong with the push pump? It works!!

when the pump was getting hot did itbfeel like it was vibrating? if so then it might be that you have some blockage somewhere

Does the feed for the wipers not provide the live to the switch? Do you therefore need another live feed?

Connect wire to green feed at wiper motor and connect other end to washer pump
Connect black/green wire on wiper switch to T1 on new switch
Connect wire from pump to T8 on switch
Connect wire from T4 to earth.
You may have to swap the wires over on the pump depending on whether it is sucking or blowing
1st position on switch should operate wipers, 2nd position should operate wipers and washers

Hey! So I tried this over the weekend, and started to burn out the heater motor, with some smoke coming out of the vents.
Have I backfed this somehow?
A couple of others have said they've tried this; so I must be doing something wrong. Any ideas?
