Which brand for electronic Ignition
Hello all,
I am considering electronic ignition as I am sick and tired of poor quality points, condensers, Dizzy caps etc, and I am wondering which is the best/ most reliable brand/ manufacturer of electronic conversion ?
Regards

Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
I fitted the Aldon Ignitor nearly 16 years and 50,000 miles ago. The cap, Lucas Sports coil and rotor arm were all new at the same time. Never think about them, they just work.

You still use the rotor arm and dizzy cap......the electronics replaces only the points and condenser. The systems from SimonBBC and Accuspark seem to get equally good feedback and appear to be straightforward to install - although I have never done it myself.

Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
I too got sick and tired of poor quality ignition parts, I went to the Distributor Doctor for a Condensor, rotor arm and points and fingers crossed normal service has been resumed.
When I rang to order the parts he questioned why I was ordering two condensers, when I explained one was for a spare he was confident I would not need to replace it due to failure.

Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
I installed an Aldon Ignitor (sold under license from Pertronix I think) many years ago. Recommended. Very neat as it all fits under the distributor cap with just one extra wire to the coil. So far so good. I keep my old points-based dizzy in the boot just in case of failure - no need for it yet touch wood / fingers crossed!
Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
If you're handy with a soldering iron you could knock up one of these:
http://www.velleman.co.uk/contents/en-u ... 20ignition
It still uses the points but only as a switch using negligable current. Ie the points will probably never wear out as the kit handles the high current. If the device does fail, you can still revert to points.
Only £15ish so you could build 2 and add a socket so you can switch them out easily if one fails.

Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
Got to remember to grease the points cam though!
Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
And that seems to be the weak point with some of the points on sale these days - the 'heel' wears down in no time......
Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
Is there a known good supplier of points? Or is there an aftermarket part for something like an A series Mini that would fit and be of good quality?
(I don't have points or an A series engine but am nonetheless curious about such things)

Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
I had one of those Maplin/Velleman kits on my Traveller for quite a few years, and built it into a broken Sparkrite casing.
I went over to the Accuspark (built into the distributor) a few years ago, and it's been excellent.

Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
I fitted a kit from simonbbc a few years ago, like others have said there is only one extra wire to attach. The main difference I noticed is how quickly it starts, less than one second of the starter motor turning on a warm day! If you don't keep your oil topped up the engine fires before the oil pressure light has gone out
Simon can also give you a different advance curve to suit any engine modifications, I think this was no extra cost but it was a while since I ordered it.
I was debating whether a circuit to delay power to the ignition for a second or 2 before it can fire would benefit the bearings etc.

Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
In our rail diesels - we run an electric oil pump to build up pressure before cranking the engine !
Re: Which brand for electronic Ignition
I once read an article where someone had routed the ignition via the oil pressure switch, thereby preventing the start up untill the light went out, don't quite understand how it was wired but he claimed that it stopped the dredded death rattle on start up.
