Help!! Headlights given up on M.O.T. day

Post by Pmill »

Hi Guys.
Could anyone please offer any assistance on my main beam on my headlights??
Took it for M.O.T. and the main beam has just given up at the garage, was working fine day before test.
Not units or bulbs as have checked both out, no power to multi plugs behind them. works on high beam, side lights and rear lights work fine, could it be the Dipper switch ??

Yes could be.
Give it a good squirt of WD or switch cleaner and operate it a few times.

Hi.

I tried all that and in the end ordered a new one. That's o.k .if it solves the problem, but if i does not i am still stuck without lights and retest looming. As far as i am aware it can only be dip switch or light switch, which i doubt cos all other lights work, The one thing the headlights have that others don't is dip switch.

Did you try and clean the old one out?
They get full of crud because of their location - Also check the wiring to and from it.

They looked sealed to me? unsure if it would come apart?
The wiring has a good live going to it, but you would of thought that if you bypassed the switch with a peice of wire. it would work? i.e. the plug has three female spades on it.one is the live and the other two i presume high and low beam.
So if you bridge the live to either they should work? but they don't

It can't be the switch - most likely a large foot has pulled a wire off the dip switch - check that...

Don't think it's possible to push one wire off dip switch as it has one multi plug going to it.
If you push one off you push all three off, and the high beam would not work would it??

Maybe pulled out - have a LOOK. actually - I'm not sure you need a Main beam for mot - as long as the Dip beam is correctly set, and doesn't dazzle - and the headlights cannot be selected up to Main beam (as seems to be the case) - I think that's a PASS !

It's my understanding that if a vehicle is equipped to do something then it must work.

There are a whole bunch of bullet connectors for the headlights towards the front of the OS inner wing, thats where they emerge from the loom, and then to the OS headlamp and the link over to the NS one, well worth a check and clean of that lot, if the switch and dip switch are OK.

Swap the dip and main beam wires on the dip switch.
Had a dip switch fail, a bit aukward when you dip the liights and it goes dark

I had a similar issue once which had the lights going out when I pressed the dip switch, traced it back to a poor bullet connection in the loom, suggest you could try removing the steering wheel, taking out the card from the drivers side storage area and then examining the wires here, there is a join here from the dip switch, from memory the dip switch is coloured blue/white wire, the previous advice you have had re swapping wires over and checking bullet connections towards the front makes sense but the area I have indicated is one thats not visible without a bit of removal work first , a circuit tester would be useful trying to trace this fault also-good luck !
