Unless you intend to keep checking and adjusting the timing - a dab of paint on the front pulley and on the timing chain cover is all you need.
Just set the timing as per the existing marks and then paint corresponding marks in a position you can see.
The marks work well with my electronic ignition and are easily seen with the strobe light.
At the end of the day what ever you set the ignition to it is only a base setting - the final adjustment will be determined by road testing or rolling road.
