Fuel gauge not working

Post by darranlatham »

Fuel gauge was showing half full when fuel tank full.
Now gauge showing empty (tank full of fuel).
Should I replace fuel gauge and Voltage Stabiliser.
What is the Voltage Stabiliser actually doing
Any photos would be great for wiring at back of Speedo

Hello

If it is a Morris Minor 1000 you have there are a couple of things to check before replacing anything.

1. Check the usually green wire going to the fuel tank sender unit has not come loose. A simple push fit. This can be found in the boot under the spare tyre in the centre of the fuel tank.
2. Remove the fuel tank sender unit from the tank and check to see if it is stuck or the arm is damaged. ( you may need a new cork gasket to refit the sender unit. This can be found for a few pounds on the internet). If it is damaged replace the sender unit.

If you find the sender unit to be ok and the wiring seems ok I would suspect something inside the sender unit is at fault.
Usually it is the sender at fault although there could be a gauge issue but as you say it was showing half full then empty it sounds like a faulty sender unit.

Not sure what the voltage stabiliser does.

Hope this helps.

The voltage stabaliser supplies a constant 10V to the instruments so the reading is not affected by battery state of charge, the original ones use a coil around a bimetalic strip and some points, you can get more reliable solid state replacements nowadays.

To check the sender ground the wire at the sender, the gauge should then read full, if it doesent move take the speedo out, check for 10V at the feed to the gauge, if you have this ground the wire which goes to the sender, if the gauge moves you have a faulty wire, if it doesent the gauge has had it. If you didnt have 10 v the regulator is not working or you have no 12v feed to it , it also needs to be earthed.
