Ignition Timing

Post by markie »

Hello again
Im running on unleaded using an additive as my head has not been converted yet. How should I change my timing settings to take account of this .

timing

Basically, you only need to change your timing IF you are experiencing
'pinking' under normal driving conditions i.e. you are not trying to
accelerate up a hill in top gear when you should be in 3rd or in other
ways asking the engine to do to much. If you ARE experiencing
pinking(a metallic pinging sound which disappears when you ease off of
the accelerator) then you need to RETARD the ignition,by trial and error,
until you no longer hear the pinking. The knurled adjuster on the side
of the distributor takes eleven clicks to equal one degree of timing.
so if necessary try retarding one degree at a time until you are happy.
If you are not getting pinking then don't adjust it.

If you are unleaded with an additive, does the additive contain an octaine booster? If so, then you should be OK and should not need to adjust the timing.

If not, then as Willie suggests, you may be OK as you are but if you start pinking or running hot, then RETARD the timing a couple of degrees.

I have not tried this myself on a Minor, but for Ford engines, 4-6 degrees is recommended.

I would not go that low myself in one go with the Minor engine, but try adjusting in small decrements, trying the engine each time.

To cure this problem try using an octane boosting additive such as Castrol Valvemaster Plus (Plus meaning octane boost).

I use it on my tuned 1380 A-Series and it seems to like it!

I also use valve master 'plus' (but in my girlfriends standard 1098).
The timing is set to 4 degrees BTDC and it's been very happy.
I chose 'plus' for the octane boost as my own cars do 125 and 145 mph... but now I know it helps to reduce pinking I'll keep spending that little bit extra.

Had I realised how good/easy it was I'd never have bothered transferring an unleaded head from each previous minor I owned onto the next one.
