Only the later 8cwt commercials had wide wheels.

there were a couple of changes mnade to uprate the load capacity - these were obscure things such as thicker steering arms as well as the wider rims. The higher capacity LCV's were an optional extra so not related to age and not specific to any of the big users of that time.
The load capacity is stated on the V5, so if it is an 800CWT it will be shown there.

I won these on ebay for £140 including the p&p,I hope they are what I'm looking for for my 68 pickup, the seller stated they are morris minor GPO wide van wheels, the tyres are not included in the sale, the seller is scrapping them, as they are 8 years old and he doesn't want to post them as well as the rims.

David - make extra sure they are what they are stated to be!!! I've been to collect 'wide van rims' only to find they were standard rims from a van with a wider tyre... An appology from the seller was ok, as I only travelled 20 miles and it was a genuine mistake, but if you're paying without seeing, take as many precautions as you can to make sure they are Lp917 and not buckled and/or badly corroded at the sealing faces.
Wow 800 CWT thats 40 tons
Thank goodness we got the metric system now! All that stuff becomes logical ;-)

yes you've got me thinking there, Ive revisited my ebay messages and this is what the seller sent me

"The GPO rims were a factory option, and are v rare, and were approx 1" wider .Otherwise they are the same, diameter, and stud pattern. regards...

inch wider than standard sounds right, hope thats the rim and not the tyre.

Get him to CONFIRM that these wheels are 4.5J - and have LP917 stamped on the face of one of the hub section upstands - where the hub cap would grip. All this talk of 'GPO rims' is just bluster and hype. I doubt many (if any) GPO vans would be the uprated 8 cwt version - GPO had no need to carry heavy loads. DO NOT pay until assured they are LP917 rims......

An inch wider is good - that matches.
The difference is spread approx 2/3 on the outside of the rim and 1/3 on the inside.
They couldn't make it even as the clearance to top trunnion is very limited.

You can see the difference in 'width' of the first flat edge when standing next to the car - on the saloon rim it is narrow and on the wide rims it's much wider. The difference means that the hubcap face sits inside(wide rim) or outside (standard rim) of the edge of the rim (probably a bad explanation without a picture :roll)

Ray you were correct, an inch wider did sounded right, they arrived today and I'm very pleased with them.Quite a relief. The black painted one in the photo is a standard saloon wheel just in the image for comparison.

they look like 917's as the rivet is nearest the outside edge.

I can't make any numbers out apart from these, there is light surface rust, so I may be better looking when they've been cleaned up a bit.[frame]Image[/frame]

The stamping should be on the 'flats' on the centre section = where the hub caps clip on.

Hi David,
You need to look at the 3 flats on the raised ring (the ones that form the hubcap clip) not the 4 flats inbetween the wheel nuts.

Some of the pressing are very light and if the wheels have been blasted then it can be lost and not readable but the stamp is located on the flat opposite the indent used to remove the hub cap.

LP917 or LP936 both wheel are the exactly the same widith the inner is welled in teh opposite on the LP936 so the offset is all at the front whereas the LP917 its at the rear

GPO NEVER used wide rims and were painted black.

Hope this helps
