Hub caps.

Post by midget »

No reply to my question in another thread so I'll try here as it may be more relevant.
Have Minors, of any type, ever been fitted from the Factory with "plain" hub caps please? For clarification--without the "M" in the centre.
This is related to the problem concerning Weller wheels elsewhere.

Plain hubcaps were definitely fitted to vans and pickups.

Plain hub caps were fitted to later Austin badged vans and pickups, along with lp917 wheels, so I think is the same size hub cap as the M logo ones.

According to Ray Newell's book:
Plain hubcaps for van/pickup from April 1968 until end of production (Austin version from 'late 1967' onwards). Very early saloons/convertibles also had plain hubcaps (different size possibly) from start of production until March 1951.

Thanks to all. I will inform Wellers of this fact.
If anyone has an example of one, could you please measure the width of the inner rim edge where it "clips" over the wheel location and report back please? This is to prove that this IS the vital area that has caused the problem with their otherwise excellent product.

I can remember having a conversation with a bodyshop guy a few years ago about Lowlights rolling on corners because of wheels collapsing. He described them as a flat wheel that would crack up.
So I think Weller have a early Lowlight hub cap.
Hope this helps. I haven't got one to measure.

Just measured the inside edge of my late Austin pickup plain hub caps and they are 8 3/4 inches.

Thanks again, but it is the width of the inside of the EDGE of the rim that I need please. It is the piece that actually clips over the formed/raised portion of the wheel. There are 3 of them which retain the hub cap to the wheel.
Sorry, maybe I did not explain it clearly enough. It will need a micrometer to measure this small section. It is much wider on the later caps which most of us have.

The inside edge is rolled inwards with a diameter of 2.7mm and the depth is 2.6mm.
As I have said these are original plain hub caps fitted to a 1969 Pickup and I thought these were the same as other models with the M logo, except for perhaps the Lowlight models.
I have no other hub caps to compare them to.
