PAINT CODE B.S or RAL etc FOR SILVER PAINT FOR LATE 1960'S WHEELS PLEASE.

If you need/want to be picky there were three different shades to identify.

Saloons convertibles and Travellers were supposedly 'Dark Silver' from October 1967 to May 1970 or end of production (wheels apparently pressed, assembled and painted at Dunlop factory). Last Travellers were 'Light Silver' from June 1970 to end of production.

Supposedly LCVs were 'Aluminium Silver until some time in 1968 then 'Dark Silver' until end of production.

I think that's the one supplied by Dunlop (?) which I believe was quite generic to all manufacturers who were supplied by them. That being the case I suspect you won't find a BMC paint code.

The usual specialist suppliers don't list it. Even the ever-helpful Mike at David Manners Group could only tell me exactly what I posted yesterday (above).

To be honest, unless you're aiming for a concours finish, I wouldn't worry too much. Just look around for something that is a reasonable match.

I would advise against rattle-cans of inexpensive products describing themselves as 'Silver Wheel Paint'. These rarely provide a long-lasting finish and are a bit too 'bright-looking'. As a suggestion, perhaps look at powder-coating instead. That way you should be able to agree the shade you want with whoever undertakes the job for you.

Thanks palacebear they will be done in 2k Dark silver (69 van) i'm not a fan of powder coating.
I will have a look at the colour chips next time I go into the paint shop.
Also how would a concours judge know if it was the correct silver anyway?
They may know perhaps light or dark for the year maybe.

I wondered about the element of concours judging myself (not something I have, or intend to gain experience of). I presume some judges may know every last detail and variation thereof, however, as you say they may only differentiate between light and dark... If they even go to that level of detail!

As frequently stated here... it's your car and, as with all aspects of it, its presentation ultimately is a matter of your personal preference

After tyres were removed a good match to the original silver I found to be RAL 9022 SILVER in 2k other silvers are available but water based & then require clear lacquer

Please be careful if using a clear laquer over paint that it is compatible - I made the mistake and the laquer all peeled off after about two years - now I have a rat-look van.....
2K seems a better option and should last (and last and last...)
