Dashboard Clock
Does anyone know where I might be able to obtain a dashboard clock?
I did hear something about them being quite hard to get hold of, but might have got the wrong end of the stick? Couldn't give two hoots about it being original as long as it looks the part and works!

Hi Dan,
Regarding your enquiry about glove box clocks I presume you are talking about the MM/Series II Gold dashboard clocks? These are quite difficult to find and more difficult to find in good condition and working.
Twenty years ago now, I had decided I wanted to restore a Series II Convertible and before I located the car I spent a great deal of time locating the clock first! That's how difficult it was then to find one. Not sure now but I wouldn't think it would be easier.
I did see a brand new Smiths original one (boxed) on Ebay last year and it sold for £260-00! Ouch!
I have subsequently purchased a quartz battery powered clock which looks totally original from the outside but isn't an original Smiths item. It will probably be more reliable than the original though. They are notorious for being delicate in operation.
The two clock photos posted previously are not the correct type for a Minor as the bezel should be of the chromed type.
Please see the attached pictures of my quartz clock which has the correct type face and cream colour (it even says Smiths on it) of the original but incorrect rear. It will do until I can find an original Smiths one.

The diameter of the outside of the chrome bezel is 85-86mm and the outer diameter of the body of the clock is 80mmDan_Harris wrote:Does anyone happen to know (or can quickly check) what Diameter the clock should be?
Cheers
Hope these pictures help. This is a genuine item for the Minor:

You are indeed right, mine is not a clock for a Minor. I think in its previous life it was mounted behind the dash (similar to the MM gauges) and its brass bezel was painted black. I took the decision not to chrome plate it but paint it the present 'silvery colour' to more match the anodised aluminium surrounds of the fuel/speedo and oil pressure gauge.
And its got a lovely tick when running!

Minor Developments produced the original replicas and also marketed them as a mantlepiece clock. I bought mine from them at the Telford Rally in 1994. Before that I had been looking for a clock for years. After the replicas went on sale original clocks started appearing on rally stalls.

Re: Dashboard Clock
There's one available right now. It's not what one would call cheap either...
