Barn Find

Post by GrumpyOne »

Has anyone else noticed how every classic car on Ebay, Morris or not, is now the result of a "barn find"? The sellers of these "genuine rare barn find" cars obviously think that a car which has been sitting festering in a big shed for twenty years is worth more than a car that has been lying rusting in someones little shed for the same lenght of time.
Given the number of "barn find" cars on Ebay and the number of barns in the UK there had to be at least four cars sitting just waiting to be found in every barn.

Yes, it's total bllocks

Every idiot with an old banger, some even say barn find with a question mark??
As if to imply it could be a barn find if it wasn't just a garbage old banger

The other ones I like are:

I haven't tried it but the engine turned over before it went in the barn.
May need some work.
Looks to be in good condition (that one is always supplemented by one solitary picture taken from 300 yards away).
Needs a good polish or a respray.
Only done 25,000 miles (who in their right mind would buy a 45 year old car based on a low mileage speedo reading?)

Wasn't that what the designer of the Volvo V70 said when he was asked to design it? They wanted the front half to look like a Jaguar with a garden shed attached to the rear!

V70 owner :D

Only real 'Barn Find' car I've ever discovered was a 1990 Renault 5 in a corner of a barn used for caravan storage on a nearby farm. It was covered in dust with red paint faded to pink and I was told the scrapman would be getting it soon as the barn was being sold, so of course I bought it. Three years on, and I'm still running it as an everyday hack. (Only 17 left of that model according to howmanyleft.co.uk...)
Shame it wasn't anything exotic or even a GT... Had plenty of more interesting garage, shed and garden finds over the years though :)

Think the phrase 'barn find' is now just a generic search term for anything a bit grotty looking that hasn't been used recently...
cheers
Iain

I know what you mean,we're just back from staying with friends in Buckinghamshire and watching the Red Kites swooping around their garden was amazing. Never been a 'twitcher' but I could get tempted.

To be honest, this is my Barn find, a '50 MM somewhere in the woods in the Netherlands, behind a tractor and a caravan.
Parked there for years, never been on the road since '89.[frame]Image[/frame]
