Varnish for oak work tops ?

I have just put in a small kitchen and used real oak work tops, I used danish oil to seal it but it needs something better, I saw some polyurethane varnish but does anyone know of a product that might be better. DIY.......

The oil is hard wearing as it is specifically designed for oak floors and wears well, we used to treat ours yearly.
The problem with oak/beech is that it does not soak up the oil as a softwood does so you need a oil that will sit on the surface and harden and stand up to the rigours of daily use which this does.
Varnish, as it will not soak in and sit on the surface may crack as the wood moves with temperature variations.

Thanks Richard, not seen those products before, I will get some to try they both look ok,I need round the sink protection as i have a few splashers in my house

One thing I've learnt over the years is to avoid polyurethane...spawn of the devil.

A few people had said not to use polyurethane, I got some of the Ikea stuff TrickyDicky suggested as i was near there and it has helped, Just waiting to see how it copes with the water round the sink

I tried a few products on off cuts this week and ended up doing all of the oak with tung oil, It was not the cheapest option but it has made a great job and i sealed the quearry tile splash back with it aswell, I wonder how it would look on a traveller woodwork ?
you can get it cheaper but screwfix was just down the road

Sounds good! I wouldn't use anything else apart from an oil of some sort on real wood worktops. Prob best to go over it every year or so with the same stuff

Just gone midnight and i have applied another coat of tung oil on the oak tops and on the quarry tiles i used on the walls, It all seems to have worked ok.

We use Liberon: stain first, then Finishing Oil, which leaves a really good, hard surface.
