We need a new 'off topic' and 'off colour' post soon....Racking my brain to find something suitable.

Oh dear just when I thought I had been forgiven for the Ginger bush saga I have been banished from the matrimonial bed yet again. I have been practising my culinary skills by concocting a Brussel sprout, pickeled egg and baked beans curry. The dog has begged to go out in the garden and refuses to come back in. I feel a bit guilty over this as I blamed him until I was found out.

A very Merry Christmas and a happy new year to all my readers regarding the Ginger Bush which has now been covered in a black lacy material to keep out the cold. I'm hoping that come the spring I might be able to remove the material and see if there are any signs of sprouting. My poor Purple morning glory has all but disappeared due I'm sure to the cold weather. You never know perhaps in the spring when the sap starts to rise I might see some growth.

Keep it warm and well handled, with a bit of grease now and then or other more suitable lubrication, which will prevent that bane of Purple Morning Glory, largely due to underuse - I refer, of course to the dreaded scourge of droop! I understand there are specialists who offer these services if the Ginger Bush remains dormant and in hibernation, but have never used them myself, so cannot make any recommendations

Christmas Cheer and alcohol can sometimes coax the Ginger Bush out of hibernation, but don't push it, otherwise a frosty atmosphere can soon descend again, causing withdrawal and rendering the elusive creature all but invisible.

During the cold damp season you should still keep the area clean to prevent fungal growth

I thought I would check on the Ginger bush to see if it was surviving. I carefully pulled back the black lacy covering to see if it was ok when I was caught in the act and received a strong reprimand from the present Mrs B. My poor old Purple morning glory seems to have disappeared completely I don't think it likes the cold but the Mother in laws tongue which appeared just before Christmas seems to be thriving and looks like its here for a long time. Its not my favourite its very acidic and sharp.

Uncovered too early I fear. Gently does it with coaxing and stroking until moisture appears in the foliage. This will indicate a readiness to face the world again as the new year progresses.

If it has become miscoloured, dry and crusty you should seek a new one, Garden centres are often full of mature ones at this time of year, though size and quality may vary. Be careful to avoid any diseased examples

TDV102 you are right. At my local garden centre I saw lots of MILF (Mature In Leaf / Flower) Ginger Bushes. Absolutely the right place to go if you need to revive the Purple Morning Glory!

I'm a bit apprehensive of visiting our local garden centre, the last time I went there I was escorted from the premises due to a misunderstanding regarding the protective film to stop the discharge from my Purple morning glory. A shame really as I'm sure there are several assistants of mature years who would be able to show me a variety of Ginger bushes in different stages of growth.

If you are planting ensure you do not remove the protective skin from your bulb.

Just watching The Chase, Richard is a keen gardener and wants to win money to buy a special greenhouse for his ginger bush.

Thats nice to see that Dick is looking after the Ginger bush. I'm very tempted to have another look at mine to see if it has survived the cold weather but the last time I pulled back the Black lacy material covering the bush to have a look I was severely admonished by the present Mrs. B.
