Widened stock rims

Post by gasolinescream »

I recently saw pair of rims that were ideal for my project. They were stock but re-hooped and taken out to either 5.5 or 6", I cant for the life of me remember which.

I wish i'd kept the advert as it had a great description of how they made and set up perfectly to go under a stock rear arch. Something like spaced inward half an inch and outward one and a half. Made by a Moggy specialist but again I can't remember who.

Does anyone know of a company that does this or who can do the job?

Many thanks Dan

I think the best and most cost effective method is buying ESM's remanufactured van rims. Plus you can sell your originals to offset the cost - not that standard minor rims are worth much!

Alternatives are 'banding' which can cost over and around £300 for 4, and takes time and your old rims. Leaving the car immobile while you wait.

Chris banded rims are of no interest to me plus some MOT places can get funny about them. The wheel isn't banded it's re-hooped and only the center is used. I do know of other places through the hot rod world but thought there was a company doing these specially for a Moggy using the re-hoop method.

M25man that's job done, no messing about. They'll look killer with a stock hubcap and a pair of van rims on the front. Exactly the stock but different look i'm after.

Another thing ticked off the list, much appreciated

That's great. Can I ask what size tyres your running please? The rears really fill the arch nicely. Also is your car lowered?

Thanks for the picture as it gives me something to stare and dream at :D

the rears are 195/70/14 but could probably do with being 185s as they rub a tad even with rolled arches. the fronts are 155/80/14. and yup its lowered, but the fronts gonna come down a smidge more when i get the chance to do it

How much is your car lowered please? I had hoped to squeeze a 185/70 in on a 5.5 rim with my car being lowered 1.5" all around. The car already has new 145/70's on the stock rims so I may just tidy those until I can afford van rims. Should hopefully give me the look similar to yours, nose down with the rear arches filled with tyre.

I have just taken off some 185/70 R14's that were on 5.5J minilites on my minor.

Image

I had originally lowered it 1.5 inches with lowering blocks at the rear, but when I put the 185/70's on, I had to raise it 10mm with longer shackle plates (at the back end of the leaf springs) to give more clearance to the wings.

Before those I had 185/60's (see below) and they were a bit tiddly. Even lowered they didn't fill the arches much. On reflection, 185/65's might have been a happy medium!

Image

I've since ditched 14's completely and gone for 15's. On 175/60 up front and 185/55 rear.[frame]Image[/frame]

Your car looks very clean Chris and sits very nicely. Lovely car. Thank you for taking the time to load up the pictures, it helps a lot in getting ideas and also motivates me to get out in the garage as often a possible.

Should you be interested in selling the 185/70's please let me know.

Thanks again

Thought you might like to see an idea I was throwing around. A mate did a quick photoshop.

Porsche Fuchs rims on a Moggy :D I'm finding out on adaptors as we speak purely out of interest. They do look rather nice though i'd go for semi polished and black paint.[frame]Image[/frame]

Hi all,

Just seen this topic, I believe rally cars and stock car boys do hooped wheels and that it is quite common to reweld the centre into a modern wider rim getting the desired off set and back spacing etc. Try people who supply steel rally car wheels they may be able to help you.

I saw it done recently for a stockcar where they used a 17" Renault Megan steel wheel (i.e. I believe very few modern cars running steel 17" rims) but it did the trick for him.

I ran stock looking wide wheels for years on my TC saloon to give that sleeper look, but I always wanted to go up to 15" steel rims. Did say the Morris Oxford / Austin Cambridge run 15" rims and the same stud pattern or anything else for that matter?

Would be cool to have a set of these hooped especially if same stud pattern and able to run a stock hubcap also?
Anyone know of 15's that would be suitable?
Cheers
