Today was interesting, removal of bearing from ford atlas stub axles..... angle grinder, big hammer and chisel, then beat the crap out of it. Cheaper to get someone else to do, popping the stud dead easy if you have a press, cleaned and prepped awaiting powder coating.
Built the tie bars, big cds tubing 25 mm dia, m12 swivel joints, all done awaiting powder coat, need to do the toe in mounts now. Need to machine 4 bar bracket then assemble to the beam, tested the ally strengthen and carbon end plate.

Cost for DIY tie bars

Two lengths of 25mm dia CDS tube, £25 (probably cheaper if you bought off cuts )
Two M12x1.5 right hand swivel joints £14 pair
Nuts bolts and washers stock (M8 stainless bolts, washer and Nylock, M12 burnt out Nylock)
New poly bush £25 a pair

Time 2 hours, most of that figuring it out,
Powder coating, will be in box of satin black, at a guess £20max

Total= £84
Enjoyment factor 100%
Nice easy little project that any one can do
I will have plates welded on the lower arms to bolt the swivels too, then they will need re powder coating!

Studio day today, drawing all new brackets for CNC machining, in the pipe line are: VX pulley bracket, 4 bar axle brackets, axle tow in brackets, steering column support, seat rails, engine mount plates and rear suspension tower plates....

Bits arrived, gp4 ally hubs, new longer race wheel studs, plate for calliper machining, and refurb 2 speed marina wiper motor (got to figure where to hide that!)
Sent old braided stainless cable for the callipers off to Earls, they going to match and rebuild, great service so far, highly recommend.

Back in workshop tomorrow.

As regards tie rods - I have used modified rose jointed tie rods normally used on the Mini (see link below). The lower suspension arm tie bar bracket is from a Marina - heavier construction, does not require the spacer and is of much better quality. The bolt is still 5/16" UNF though.

Good solution, do you have a swivel both end or only one?

Yep seen that, want to have the wiper bottles there, thinking I might put on the podium, the area behind the bails head and the dash, I’ve got all my electrical stuff sitting in there, could sit nicely there, need to finish the rest of the platform and see where suits.

The tie bar only needs to swivel using a rose joint at one end. Articulating the lower suspension arms I found that there is no requirement to have rose joints at both ends of the tie rod. Having the rose joint at the front works well. This mod is very easy to fit and install - using a revised cross member stepped torsion bar location washer to hold the the front rose joint yoke and bolt in place plus shortening and threading (1/2" UNF) the Minor tie rod. The cups factory welded to the tie bar chassis bracket for the rubber bushes have to be removed so that the rose joint yoke and stepped washer can sit flat on and in the tie bar chassis bracket.
This arrangement has worked well for me over a good number of years.

Rear 4 bar mounts made, need to strip the axle of old mounts, the toe in brackets and links bars built, the front shock and spindle set up and tested in situ. Need to send a set of rear AVO shocks off there're shot, fortunately they still rebuild shocks.
Made tapered spacers for the link bars, and then more aggressive angle for the shocks, allowing full movement. Need to make the bottom shock mount for the arm and the reinforcement to shock mounts. Good end to a week.

Note the back of the bracket is flat to allow the ally strengthen plate to fit.
4 bar brackets 5mm plate steel and will be boxed in.

I shall be making up a Four Bar Link with the English axle I have. Adapting an Escort kit seems a little expensive to only have to cut it about so as much info and especially dimensions much appreciated.

What about the 5th bar to keep the axle central to the body?
If you intend to retain the leaf springs you only need the two bars to eliminate axle tramp.

You’ll need 4 bar with either cross link or pan hard, are you considering shock towers? The position of those in relation to the axle and body line is important not critical, I’ve placed tower so the shock toe position sit behind the axle, again using AVO coil overs, but with 2.25 springs.
There’s different schools of thought over swivel joints and poly bush, I’ve gone for poly bush on the 4 bar and swivel on the pan hard as it sits at an odd angle, value other thoughts.
Will be setting out today as I’ve got my son helping, will post images tonight.
