Good to see one in regular use instead of just preened and polished.

Thanks David, yes just started looking for a Tourer, prefer one in rag order, so I can start by stripping right down and building up on these pages.
Jagnut, right there, she's just too handy not to use every day.[frame]Image[/frame]

Having had a great summers driving with Alice, only interrupted by a sheared off rocker end. After replacing the whole rocker assembly the engine was back to running as well as usual[frame]Image[/frame]

But a recurring problem that has spanned the rocker incident has still plagued Alice. I think it's a gearbox fault, above 40mph she makes this "woop woop woop" noise, in third she makes the same sound at the top of the third gear speed just before changing to fourth gear, then nothing till she reaches forty "woop woop woop" noise, which goes at around fifty MPH. When she first started making it a few months back I though it was tyre noise, but it's got louder since then.

In preparation for having to swap out the gearbox for my spare unit, Ive started to overhaul my spare unit for a fit next year.[frame]Image[/frame]

starting with a clean and strip down, she is in a grotty state having stood in a corner of the workshop under the bench since she arrived with a load of other spare parts a few years back.[frame]Image[/frame]

I don't know yet how far I need to go, at the moment I'm thinking of a clean up and replace all seals and gaskets.[frame]Image[/frame]
rolling the splined shaft around by hand and watching the main gear wheels carefully, I can see no broken teeth or visible burring to the tooth edges.[frame]Image[/frame]

So starting with the cleaning first, quite labourious, it's going to take me several days to get in clean, nice project over the Christmas break, between family visits, dinners, a few glasses and some pressies.[frame]Image[/frame]

Hi David
From the shots it's looking promising.
I'd certainly replace the gearbox Tailshaft oil seal Part 10G199 before you put it back in the vehicle.
Gasket set...yes, any rubber covers to replace ? , Gearlever Anti -rattle kit ( Moss part No SGB 0002 ) required or does it look OK.
A swill around with some meths after you scoop out and gunk and inspect again.
Have a good Christmas.

Dave minor fan wrote:finally it's job done, with some help from my son Harry, holding both ends up at once was the key. The length of covered wood trim screwed in holding the tension of the headlining. Then some double sided tape, highly tacky, to hold the loose ends out of sight behind the rear roof joint[frame]Image[/frame]

On the whole I'm very satisfied with the result, for the price of a can of spray die and a couple of screws my £5 ebay roof liner worked out ok. Next, will be the blanks and side trim under the seatbelts

Vehicles prior to (c) MA/AA V,U,Q and (c) MAG/E....blah blah

You should have a thick rubber strip covering this join widthways.
Further investigations uncovered it was an inside job!!

thanks Pomreg, I'll look out for one of those, might help cover the join. Uncle Bob, thanks again, good advice, I've got those parts on my growing list for next years orders. Here's a thing, these levers feel quite stiff, wonder it they are bent or distorted in some way, only removal and inspection will show I guess.[frame]Image[/frame]

there are the fixings for the levers[frame]Image[/frame]

David
Stick with it / see it through. The close ups of the selector rods are showing quite a build up of old dead grease, both internally and externally.
I'm betting it will be a different story, once it's all cleaned off (scrape the worst off with a wooden lolly stick, degreasant or white spirit, wipe down with Meths to get rid of the residue ).
I've sent a p.m.

Merry Christmas

Thanks once again Bob. The manual suggests using the drain hole for access to the fixings inside the gearbox, and this is the nut for the reverse gear rod.[frame]Image[/frame]

Irmsher I use a simple cheap little point and shoot powershot A800, never use the flash though, destroys depth perception and atmosphere.
Bob, many thanks for the article from Classic monthly, very helpful, Ive read it right through and it will be in my workshop as a guide

this isn't the Submarine museum in Gosport, it's the interior of the rear gearbox extension, post diesel pouring through from jar to catch tray.[frame]Image[/frame]

pressing on with the main gearbox, the forks are withdrawn once the screws are removed, leaving the detents in the holes. These are only held in with corrupted grease.[frame]Image[/frame]

this is what the main gears look like with the forks out[frame]Image[/frame]

using Bob's step by step guide I gently tapped out the main gears, using a wide drift, trouble was it had some dried paint on it that cracked off all over the gear teeth.[frame]Image[/frame]

then the little reverse gear can come out. as you would expect, all that gentle tapping freed the sprung detents and ball bearings, some lay in the bottom of the casing, but others that made a bid for freedom to the workshop floor.[frame]Image[/frame]

final picture for today, the nearly empty interior of the gearbox casing. Just the remaining gears to come out. I may take the casings to my trusty local garage Automotion, Stan has a nice big parts washer, I wonder how much he'll charge for hot washing these main big bits.[frame]Image[/frame]

at last, with a few taps using a wooden mallet and wooden hammer handle, the first motion shaft moved forward releasing the circlip, then tapped the other way, toward the back of the box from the bell housing, out came the first motion shaft and its bearing. This is the view of the empty gearbox after the laygear was finally lifted out.[frame]Image[/frame]
