The head will probably need new valve guides - have you tested the fit of the valves in the guides?

No I haven't, I was thinking of getting the shop to put new guides in anyway!

It may not need them -getting a 'shop' to do a simple job like that is a waste of considerable money - especially if they are fine anyway! Test them first.

Hello all, sorry for silence. Life got mad.

Anybody got any tips on getting dents out of the sump? Do I put something in it and tap them out from above or turn it upside own?
Was it flat originally or was there a ridge in it?

Looks like someone thought the sump was a jacking point! If you look under parts for sale Tony Sparham's huge collection includes a couple of sumps, though a bit far for you. You could try a wanted ad - they are quite common, I think. Or just hammer it....

take a bag with sand in it, put the sump on it, and hammer it out.

Note the raised section for the dipstick next to the drain plug. Do not hammer that out!

The small dents can be tapped out by resting the upturned sump on a vertical rod with a rounded end and tapping with a panel beating hammer. Using a sandbag as suggested, or a piece of soft wood will do, you can tap the dents from the inside with the same rod. I used a socket extension for both and with a little work removed some quite nasty creases and dents.

Just take it steady!

When you have dome the bottom, check the top flange is perfectly flat.

Check for leaks after hammering out as some of the areas around the edges look to be very fragile, and the straightening may crack the metal

Thank you all, I've not got any panel beating gear. I keep seeing little kits on machine mart or something with a hammer and a few dollys for sale. I've never done any of it before but is a skill I'd like to learn, any advice or pointing towards and decent gear to buy would be appreciated.

Hello once again.

After the first house buying and moving is now complete, the new garden half built and the new shed built I want to pick up with this project. Some of you will of seen my Minor got to the point of no return and basically the only bit of minor I've kept (aside from a few sentimental parts) is this engine.

I'd really like to crack on with a rebuild, main trouble is I just don't know where to start or how to check for wear or how to keep the engine in good nick while its sat outside a car for a while.

Any advice on basic rebuilding appreciated, any literature you can point me towards, websites you name it.
Any bored people who live in Devon near Exeter who fancy cups of tea all day and lunch in the pub in return for an engine rebuild lesson, get in touch!

First question, I'll be moving the engine from my workshop at work to my shed within the coming weeks, I have access to a pressure washer at work (the block and head are both completely stripped) would it be worth me giving them a blast over then a thorough drying out and a quick blast of something to prevent corrosion?

a skill I'd like to learn,
There are some good tutorials on youtube.

I strongly recommend this book. It was written in the 1950s I think, but many feel it is still the best starting point.
