Series 2

Hi all,
On my 56 series 2, 2 door, I have just fitted the new carpet which looks great and installed the rear seats and door cards.
Below the seat portion of the rear seat there is a vertical body panel that goes down to the floor, that is the width of the interior and about 8 inches high.
Does anyone know if this vertical section would have been originally carpeted or covered with a 'hardura' type panel, screwed into place. When I got my car it had a tatty panel covering this area but I know it was not original.
