car roller

Post by ian.mcdougall »

Hi all
Has anyone made their own roller based on grumpys one, do you still have the drawing/dimensions.
Is the curved piece critical, is there a set distance where the hub plate is in relationship to the curved section to make an easy roll.

I've got a roller that I got from Roy, bolts to hubs and tips the car.
I've not looked at it since I acquired it but will take pics if you want.

I know it works as Roy took his car to 45 degrees with it with the fluids still In it.

I had an easy one, not special for the MM, so I used a little help to put him in the right position[frame]Image[/frame][frame]Image[/frame]

The gravity point from the MM is important when you want to work without a chain, and it is important to secure the car when he is in the laying position.

Hi Al
Yes please to the pics and if not too much trouble a few dimensions.

I think I saw a pic of yours Roy when searcing the site was the curve done with segments cut out of box iron and then curved and rewelded.

Hi TvdWerf
Does yours bolt to all four hubs,

Do they all only go to 45 degrees or can some go to 90 degrees.

Ill sort this out for you with pleasure.
Yes, it's in welded segments so it's faceted, thruppeny bit style. I expect once at 45 degrees a quick shove and a mattress would see the car on its side but Im on my way to Grangemouth right now so can't look until Saturday morning.

Roy, depending on the days meetings I'll either be staying in Grangemouth or Stirling and heading back tomorrow. (Friday) I may be able to pop in on way back, too early to tell as depends on those meetings. I may have to go back on site in Grangemouth on Friday you see. Will you be about on Friday?

Apologies for the brief hijack of thread

Yes Ian - welded up short sections of heavy angle iron into an approximation of a curve. I had no need to roll the car - so simply tested it as far as I dared with all fluids still on board. Just used trolley jacks and wood blocks to jack it up - the uneven 'threepenny' curve didn't cause any problems. The limitations of this type of roller is of course that the suspension mounting points need to be strong enough to carry the load. Otherwise a 'spit' may be more suitable. I have seen one made simply with two saw-horses, a scaffold pole, and a couple of sheets of heavy plywood to attach to the car (actually a bare shell) fore and aft.
And yes Al - should be around on Friday ok. When at Grangemouth - have a look up the hill - you may see a steam train in action! Roy
