Traveller slight noise when coasting and idling ...
Hi, sometimes, my traveller makes a noise which sounds like... well, 'clutch drag' if that makes sense? But only when in neutral - it stops in gear AND when clutch is pressed in... any ideas??
Re: Traveller slight noise when coasting and idling ...
Is there some freeplay at the clutch pedal? Should be ~ 1" before the carbon thrust touches the pressure plate.

Ah, hmmnn... yes, there is some free play - perhaps slightly more than an inch... actually a couple of inches of one's foot before it disengages.

Well - it's not that then !

Re: Traveller slight noise when coasting and idling ...
Might it be caused by a missing 'spring', the one that sits on the clutch rod under the car? I haven't checked it has one... if it wasn't pulling it back would the clutch then drag slightly???
Re: Traveller slight noise when coasting and idling ...
Could be - but the pedal would be flopping around - is it ?

just to hijack thread for a while, got my trav on the road adjusted clutch as there was no free play now when i dip clutch fully I get a grinding noise which disappears when i let the clutch up a little, does what does this mean

Maybe there is too much action and the clutch is running out of movement so the thrust is pressing harder against the mechanical limit of the action.ian.mcdougall wrote:just to hijack thread for a while, got my trav on the road adjusted clutch as there was no free play now when i dip clutch fully I get a grinding noise which disappears when i let the clutch up a little, does what does this mean
Also check that the gearbox steady cable is nipped up so the fan doesnt touch the rad as it the engine counters the clutch motion. (if the fan is hitting, it could potentially be crank end float )
have a listen round the mechanicals using a steel pipe/screwdriver as a stethoscope while an assistant gets the car to make the noise, you might get some ideas this way
Re: Traveller slight noise when coasting and idling ...
Why would 'fan touching' be crank end float ??? The fan isn't on the crank!

Re: Traveller slight noise when coasting and idling ...
Sound definately coming from bellhousing area and also can feel it through clutch pedal may reduce free play until noise goes
Re: Traveller slight noise when coasting and idling ...
If you can feel it through the pedal - then likely the carbon thrust is worn out - or possibly the pressure assembly has become deranged.... Remove the rubber bungs - shine a bright light in through one - and look in through the other. Engine NOT running , of course........
