Steering Rack Grease?

Hi just replacing my rubber gaitors and thought I should be re-greasing the rack while I'm in the area.. I read that the grease nipple for the rack is under the passenger side carpet.. just wondering what type of grease I should be using in my grease gun?

Is any oil required?

Thanks,
Tom

I use Moly grease - oil just runs away into the boots and leaves the rack dry.....

If you feel you really must............ Will obviously reduce air friction , so should improve fuel economy by 0.0001 % ........

Roy,
I would have thought it would have the opposite effect. By greasing the roof rack you would increase the total surface area which would cause more wind resistance hence reducing fuel economy. I suppose it depends a lot on how evenly it is applied. :o

Then, when the dirt starts sticking to the grease on the roof rack it will disturb the airflow even more and could make the car unstable

I was assuming the effect where slight roughness - due to the flies/dirt etc sticking to the grease - would create a thin boundary layer - especially as the grease/fly mix would naturally flow into a tear-drop shape on the bars thus effectively 'streamlining' the bars. Of course - I may just be talking bullsh!t !!

When it's a hot day, you could cook a lovely oversized pizza on your rack.... no sticky dough!
