hi
i need to check the tappets on my trav, but im not sure how to do it. i understand the feeler gauge part but im not sure what the "9 rule" is.

Always adds up to 9, when you have 8 fully open adjust 1, 7 open adjust 2, 6 adjust 3, 5 do 4. Easy!
Dont forget to lock them tight again after you adjust, first time I adjusted them I did that and ended upon three cylinders......

It matters not - #1 can be the rear valve if you wish! Be sure to set 15 thou exhausts and 12 thou inlets. And check/reset every 3000 miles.
