My broken engine

A question to all. On my daily commute the other day, a gradual 'Tink, tink, tink' noise was audible from the engine. I thought it was the timing too advanced, so eased back a bit (3 mile journey). Anyhoo, the afore mentioned noise got worse by the time I got to work. More like a terminal crank issue. Oil pressure and temp were completely normal.

Anyway, I've removed the head and to my surprise, found that the cylinders between 1&2 have burnt the gasket away!?

Unfortunately, I had removed the engine thinking that I'd killed it! And I've even bought a 2nd hand engine in the meantime!!! My question would be, has anyone experienced this noise with a gasket problem? Or do you think that the gasket would blow due to the crank bearings being shot?

Only a numpty would have removed the engine.
Should've sought some advice first, or listened to some.
Schoolboy mistake if you ask me.

Anyway, you don't have time to be on the forum, get working on the car.

It's nothing to do with the crank - just fit a new gasket - after cleaning everything up/checking the surfaces etc etc
Or -fit the second engine if it's in better condition.....

I must say, all jokes aside, the 998 that dad had fitted was a right gem. Poor man was very sad about it's demise.
I think i will soon be selling a few goodies from his haul of spares, to include the 1275! I know someone who will be having the exhaust that came in the purchase though...:-)

Although...i may have scuppered my exhaust worthiness with my last comment!!

Is it possible to have someone removed from this forum? Seeing as I do pay for that 'said persons' additional membership fees.

Have just checked big-end bearings and all is well. Centre main is also good. Not sure I can be bothered to to check the other two. All bores good.

I needed to paint the engine bay anyway!

Yes you can! All you need to do is switch off your computer and go to the garage ;)

I'm 27, think it's a little late for fostering.
I'm more likely to have to put him in a home, what with his age and all.

I feel obliged to respond. Is it not you, that require my free welding services? Regardless of my age or abilities (mainly lack of them).
Not only that, and in addition, the free metal, paint, rust inhibiter, tools, amusing anecdotes, etc. etc. But as ever, you know best. Bite the proverbial hand and all.

Just to post an update. I re-fitted the 998 but dispensed with the 12G295 head (already sold it) and fitted a 12G202 head instead. Although, I did 'De-shroud' the inlet valve area of the combustion chamber with a Dremel and got it skimmed.

Well, it goes very nicely (so far). No more 'clanking'. :) Not the same oomph but plenty enough. Running an AAS needle in a 1.5. Could get a bit more power with the AAA but looking to improve mpg.

Good update. Fit a 940 head - MUCH better....... And - what camshaft is it running?

It has kent 256 mild road cam. I'm trialling the set-up as is to see how it is on mpg and some motorway use. It does have flat top pistons hence, going with only 1mm skim after de-shrouding the inlet area. At a guess the compression ratio is about 9:1.
