Brake Upgrade

Post by Andysdad »

HI all,
Its been a while since I posted but I am now planning to upgrade my brakes.
My '71 traveller had discs fitted when I got her but without a servo. My plan is to fit a servo, probably one of the kits available, replace the master cylinder, both rear slave cylinders, flexi pipes plus all the pipes with Kunifer.
I am aware that there are two types of vaccumn take off available. One is a nipple that you have to fit into the inlet manifold the other is a flange that fits between the carb and the manifold.
Does anyone have an opinion as to whether one type is better than the other.
I would also appreciate any advice/comments/tips etc on my project.
Cheers

Easiest will be to find a manifold with a tapping already in place. Be aware - a servo won't make the brakes any better - it just reduces the leg load. For a small/light car like a Minor, it really shouldn't be necessary.

Andysdad,

I did what you're suggesting for my daughter and am very happy with the result.

A ready tapped manifold is best but I drilled and epoxied in the fitting as the photo.

Works a treat.

Good luck

Its your choice, but I originally fitted a servo, but them removed it. It makes the brake layout more complex, ruins any feels you have on the brake pedal too!

If you don't have the huge trunking on the bulk head (pre 1962ish), a servo can be mounted there. Although, you would need to move the bonnet pull a couple of inches over to make space.

Thanks guys for the replies, I appreciate it. It's a job I been thinking about for sometime, so will have to try it, to get it out of my system. :-?
No one has mentioned the flange that fits between the carb and manifold. Has anyone tried this method

It would be possible - but you may not get a big enough hole to get enough vacuum through for repeated applications.....
