Shock absorber replacement

Post by Unimatrix1066 »

I have looked at my shocks on my car both are leaking and one has come Away from the body.
I was wondering is there a standard replacement unit for them , the ones fitted are spaxs .

The standard replacement is the original damper whether it be fitted to front or rear suspension.

I think I might fit the new conversion kits that appear to bolt on.
The ones fitted currently bolt into the body

The 'bolt on' damper kits are poorly engineered and usually supplied with dampers that are too small and short for the job (Mini?) A MUCH smaller/lighter car!! I strongly urge you to either get a complete/well engineered 'weld in' kit from JLH - or simply fit the original dampers filled with SAE40 oil. There is absolutely nothing wrong with them - they are after all just folded up tele dampers , and with the heavier oil they work very well indeed.

I too have spax adjustables on Boris. There are 2 different rear kits made by Spax (one early and one current one) The rears of the earlier kit like mine are an odd one off size and from site seaching here I think it was found that a Saab front shock is the correct size. I think the newer type Spax kit uses a mini size damper as I ordered replacement basic oil ones just in case and they were too short for my set up (hence I think the newer kits use shorter shocks).
Are yours mounted to the stub on the chassis ? If they are i'd say it's the earlier Spax kit like mine, I think David Manners still has these kits available.
Although after all that if it's come away has the chassis mount collapsed / pulled out ?

Yes it's bolted through the chassic and looks old , the car had been of the road for 5 years.
The previous owner lady something or other modded it quite a bit, it's got a mini speedo and a indicator switch with horn on it

I ve taken pics today of the shock absorber , as I see it , it has been fitted using the exact same mounting points as the lever arm original , so therefore one will require repairs[frame]Image[/frame]

Those photos are too dark to make anything out. A good way to solve this is to shine a light on the subject, or use a flash.

Are there any bump stops present ? Looks like it has ripped the pin out of the chassis leg.....possibly because the dampers are too short. I suggest new dampers are probably the least of the worries - repair the chassis damage first, and I STILL recommend fitting standard lever arm dampers - filled with sae 40, and new bump stops of course......

The bump stop is missing , I tried to replace yesterday but on of the u bolts is seized.
I think the previous owner who had some welding done where the other side of the bolt maybe , must have removed it as the area were the bolt would come out is new metal, possibly.
I was looking at getting refurbed dampeners and link rods
