I've now acquired a 1275 Midget engine, an HS4 carb and I am looking out for a decent inlet manifold. Is there a common view on what air filter to use? I'd like the engine bay to look in sympathy with the original, and my hope with the engine and carb is usable torque more than top speed. Is there any way of modifying the HS2 filter housing to allow it to be retained without completely strangling the carb?

I tried that - even with no filter inside it strangled the airflow horribly......

We tried a similar thing with our 1380 and used a stripped out MG Metro air cleaner case with a K&N filter in it. In the same session on a rolling road the power increased from 106 to 112bhp, just by removing the MG filter case and having an open inlet! Now has a complete K&N filter with a stub stack, but not had an RR session since fitting it.

Reading more on it, the MG Metro case is good up to ~100bhp with a K&N filter fitted, so for what you are looking to do that could be a solution?

Thanks chaps. I've just been looking in the usual place and came across this ad for an MGB filter box. Did they ever really use these - I thought UK Bs always had twin SUs with pancake filters? But then, I've never had one......

It's one of the pair that an MGB would have... You can try it - not expensive..

I fitted one of those to mine and fitted a K&N filter in it. However, you will need the aluminium plenum and x2 long retaining bolts to fit it. You'll need to ask the seller if it comes with them. They're not in the photo.

Thanks. I'd already asked and found that there's no base plate! I'm now looking at a pair of Midget filters - anyone want the spare one? ko

Midget filters far too small - for the 1 1/4" SU.... avoid!

Ah. I was thinking a 1275 must have 1.5s, as I have at least learned that twin carbs only breathe one at a time. Wonder who I got that from? Back to looking for a complete MGB or Metro box, then.

I think some use Princess or Marina or Maestro filters with some success..

For an HS4, a filter from a Morris 1800 will fit with a bit of modding of the base plate (or modding of the HS2 original base plate). It will take a K+N filter element if you want too.

I have similar setup, 1275 + HS4, on my car. I used a K&N filter inside the rear filter case from an MGA.

Thanks all - pair of MGB cases ordered but it will be sometime over winter before I get round to the engine. If the MGB filter proves OK the spare one will be for sale eventually.....

I bought a Traveller last year that came with a 1275 Marina engine which has a 12G3538 Mini manifold, HS4 carb and MGB air filter box. It has the Morris Minor Centre 1.5" large bore twin silencer exhaust system with the link pipe to the cast manifold. However, sitting in my parts store from a previous 1275 Traveller, I've got the tubular LCB manifold for that exhaust system and a water heated inlet manifold which has an HIF44 carb attached and MG Metro air filter case. I'm tempted to pop the tubular LCB and water heated inlet manifold on to the new car. The inlet manifold should take either carb. Question is: HIF44 or HS4?

ive got the a series spares set up hif44 with minispares inlet manifold very happy with it maniflow 3 branch manifold and exhaust system with 1275 head makes a 1098 go very well .
