Best/alternative oil for Carburettor?

Post by swampy42 »

I have a couple of carbs that require refilling with oil and although you can get dashpot oil in small 125ml bottles I have no idea if I need 1 or 2 bottles, so I'm considering alternatives. Does anyone know if there's another type of oil that is acceptable to use in the carb. Other forums have mention SAE 20 or lawnmower oil. Thanks in advance

You can use any oil that suits your engine.
I have used 20w50 with no ill effects.
The thicker the oil the slower the damper lifts and falls.
I have even used EP90 in situations where I do not want the damper to lift quickly.
You can buy special SU damper oil but there is no need as 20w50 will fill the bill nicely.

I use 20/50 engine oil, a lot of people use 3 in 1 but it is really to thin for the job.

Just a teaspoon or two of 20W50 to start with - they don't need 'filling up'. Some modified engines respond better to 3-in-one, and as Phil says EP90 has been used by the Works where the cars are run on rough ground and don't want the pistons flapping up and down.
